These messages on my post about BMI being a crap measure are so discouraging.

We can certainly do better for children and families than guilting & shaming them into avoiding their pediatric care (who wants to come in when they worry they as the parent or their child will be made to feel that way??)

Question: how can your pediatric team better talk about weight, growth, and health with you and your child?

Hoping to hear how we can all do better. Please feel empowered to take control of the convo at your pediatric visit by sharing your wishes in advance and being open and honest when things don’t go as you’d hoped (and if you don’t feel comfy sharing wishes or feedback…reconsider how healthy that relationship is between patient-parent-pediatrician). It matters too much to your child, your family, and all the other families cared for to not share feedback!!

Listener question re: CROUP...from my dear parents podcast question...croup can nearly always be handled the next day in the office. most recent podcast has a mom question re: croup management and when to go in.

What's helped your kiddo with that barky cough?

Reducing friction points with teenagers actually makes a big difference when their schedules are so busy that you only have a limited amount of time with them.

in this video, I talk about how we reduce friction points by having a set semester budget $50 for school food. We have plenty of food at home for them to use to pack a lunch. They can make their own lunch and decide how to budget their $50 for the semester.

What do you think? What friction points do you face on a regular basis with your tweens and teens? I'm talking about that more on my substack, and you can continue the convo with us!

Interesting-est point in my view: the impact of parental screen time on language development. Guilt not...I tell parents EXACTLY what to do (without going screen free which is impossible duh) on the dear parents podcast & substack this week

Instead of “see you shouldn’t be selfish like Pig or you’ll fall out the window!”

what if the lesson was:

“Hmmm…I wonder why Pig the Pug is the way he is…do you think there’s a reason he’s so protective of his things?”

I rearely tell kids to stop eating cereal BUT I do tell every single one of them to add a dollop of peanut butter (or other nut butter) to the side of the bowl to instantly add more protein to their breakfast and get other sources of protein in addition to their cereal like:
✅ Eggs however they’ll take them…our 13 year old makes scrambled eggs every morning for our whole crew
✅ Overnight oats…we make one big batch of these weekly on sundays and it lasts all week
✅ Meats like deli meat or traditional breakfast meats like sausage
✅ Beans (lol just had to put it on there)
✅ Protein shakes & bars (although some are quite ultra processed and pricey if you’re buying them rather than making so be choosy and use with caution)
✅ Cereal + PB…try Raisin Bran crunch (totally different than the non-crunch version) with PB and you’ll all be hooked (ask how I know)
✅ Cheeses
✅ Protein-added pancakes waffles etc…again, some are more ultra processed but more protein helps. You can fortify yourself by making with oats instead of flour, adding peanut butter instead of syrup, etc etc.

How much? If they’re getting little, just focus on MORE rather than counting macros. In fact, plz don’t mention or count macros in front of your children or teens, period.

What did I miss? What works for you? What have you noticed about their day when they do get enough protein to start the day?

our fam favorites: overnight oats, scrambled eggs, greek yogurt, raisen bran crunch (not regular raisen bran... there's a big difference!) with a dollop of peanut butter added to the bowl...

ight now is the perfect time to set a new breakfast habit and add more protein to start your child's day as the new year starts...and watch how much better things go in their morning classes.

what protein works best for your kids??
