We're so proud of our very own Codi, she deserves her very own Facebook post!

Not only is Codi an incredible hospice nurse case manager for our team, she's also our favorite softball coach around (we're a little biased).

Last night following the Best Places to Work ceremony, Codi threw the first pitch for the evening's Saltdog game! Great arm Codi - we're so proud of ALL that you do! ⚾

HoriSun Hospice was named ‘Best Place to Work’ in Lincoln by Woods Aitken LLP, the Lincoln Journal Star, and Lincoln HR at Haymarket Park last night for the fourth consecutive year!

We are honored to say we received FIRST place in the Medium-Size Company category this year! This was our company’s fourth year participating in this program, which was started in 2013, and we are enthused to call ourselves the Best Place to Work in Lincoln.

‘Best Places to Work’ recognizes local companies who, through a third-party administered employee survey, rank their respective companies as being the best places to work. The areas surveyed are varied parts of employee life, including workplace environment, leadership direction, culture, and management practices.

At HoriSun Hospice, being named a “Best Place to Work” reflects our deep commitment to creating a supportive, meaningful, and team-centered environment. Locally owned and mission-driven, we prioritize flexibility, communication, and compassion; not only in the care we provide, but in how we care for our staff. From responsive leadership to creative scheduling options and emotional support resources, our team feels heard, valued, and empowered. We believe when our employees are well cared for, they bring their very best to the patients and families we serve every day.

“We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition again,” said Dr. Bob Bleicher, Medical Director of HoriSun Hospice. “Our success has always been rooted in the dedication, kindness, and professionalism of our team. Year after year, they demonstrate what it means to care deeply for others, and this award reflects the positive workplace culture they help create every day.”

Susan Burkey, Retired RN and Program Coordinator, added, “Being named a Best Place to Work is especially meaningful because it comes directly from employee feedback, which is given anonymously. We are proud to foster an environment where people feel valued, supported, and inspired by the work they do. We are also grateful for the trust and encouragement we receive from our community, whose support helps make HoriSun such a special place to serve and work.”

Our team and their families had a blast last night celebrating this incredible achievement! We celebrated winning FIRST place and it was a night for us to honor our company and to remember for years to come.

THANK YOU to each member of our team, and to everyone who has supported us as a locally-owned hospice agency in the Lincoln community!

"Thinking about mortality helped people better tune in to positive emotions, a 2007 study found. Another study in 2017 found a link between talking about death and relief from anxiety about it.

The problem is that many people, especially in the United States, avoid acknowledging, thinking or talking about death and dying, which can make them more fearful and less prepared to handle the inevitable end of life, said Dr. Brian Carpenter, professor of psychological and brain sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

'When you accept death … it promotes community, it promotes meaning,' Swisher said. 'You’re not going to be here forever. What are you going to do with the time you have?'"

In the search for a long, happy and healthy life, thinking about death may seem like it would divert you from the trail, but research suggests doing so could play an important part in helping you along the journey. https://cnn.it/4dFdZWV

The Exhale

It begins long before the last breath
Long before the room goes still
It starts in that first moment
when a diagnosis enters the air
and something inside you
quietly tightens.

From there, the waiting starts
You hold your breath without meaning to
through each update
each slow change
each “let’s see what tomorrow brings”
You learn the landscape of decline
by instinct
listening for shifts no one else hears
showing up again and again
because love holds you in place.

Caring for someone who is dying
creates its own rhythm
a steady, quiet bracing
for whatever comes next
It reshapes your days
your nights
your lungs
You try to stay ready
even when ready isn’t possible.

And then their last breath comes
Soft
Final
Not dramatic, just true.

But the breath that breaks you
isn’t theirs
It’s yours
That long, trembling exhale
you didn’t know you were holding
A release wrapped in relief
in grief
in the sharp ache
of a chapter closing.

We think the final breath
belongs to the dying.

But the truth is
the real ending is ours
the exhale that follows
the one that carries
the weight, the love, the loss
and the letting go.

That exhale…
our exhale
that’s the moment
it all becomes real.
