Today, FDA and CDC are providing an update on the multi-state Cyclospora outbreak linked to recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. https://www.fda.gov/food/outbreaks-foodborne-illness/investigation-15-state-outbreak-cyclospora-illnesses-iceberg-lettuce-july-2026

Important things to know:
➡️ Cyclosporiasis can be a serious illness. We encourage anyone who suspects they have symptoms of cyclosporiasis to consult their medical care provider.

➡️Due to additional interview data, CDC’s confirmed cases were expanded to include illnesses in people who reported exposure to Taco Bell OR Taylor Farms de Mexico iceberg lettuce.

➡️As a result, additional cases and states are being added to the outbreak. Many of these illnesses began before the Taylor Farms de Mexico iceberg lettuce recall on July 17, 2026.

➡️We expect to continue to see the number of confirmed cases rise, despite the recall, due to the fact that it can take as long as six weeks from the date of consumption for CDC and state officials to determine if a sick person is part of this outbreak.

➡️FDA remains confident that all iceberg lettuce related to this specific Cyclospora outbreak is off the market.

A batch of mosquitos our Environmental Health interns collected on July 30, 2026 in the Chestnut, IL area has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV).

We would like to remind everyone that the best way to prevent WNV disease is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and to use personal protection.

🦟 Do reduce your exposure by avoiding being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn. Repair screens with tears or any other outer openings. Keep windows shut and eliminate areas of standing water around your property where
mosquitoes can breed.

🦟 Do repel mosquitoes from biting when outdoors by wearing shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt (light-colored clothing is preferred). Wear repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535 and use according to the label instructions.

🦟 Do report any locations where stagnant water lies for more than a week to the local health department.

If you are bitten by a mosquito, there is no reason to be tested for WNV since illnesses related to mosquito bites are rare. However, if you develop symptoms such as high fever, confusion, muscle weakness or severe headache, you should see your doctor.
