"I just want to help others by donating something my body creates naturally.”

Meet Jamie, an O-negative donor doing his part to keep our blood supply strong! Did you know that O-negative blood is also referred to as the universal blood type? This is because any patient in need can receive it. Car accident victims, infants, and cancer patients all rely on O-negative blood being available every day of the year.

This Blood Collector’s Week, we’re celebrating the incredible people who make every donation experience one filled with care, compassion and a personal touch.

From welcoming a first-time donor through the process to helping a longtime donor feel right at home (and yes, sometimes rolling up their sleeves to donate themselves) they make sure every donation is collected with care.

To our blood collectors and collection teams: thank you for being such an important part of the connection between donors and patients. ❤️

On a day when we pause to remember and honor those we lost on 9/11, we’re grateful for everyone who chose to give back by giving blood.

Thank you to every donor who stopped by one of our donor centers or blood drives today. Your generosity is a powerful reminder that even in the face of tragedy, community, compassion and helping one another can make a difference.

At today's blood drive with Lincoln Fire & Rescue, we had the honor of meeting Jack. Jack is currently in the academy at LFR, and he started his day bright and early—running the stairs at Memorial Stadium at 5 a.m. Then, just a few hours later, he headed to the LFR blood drive and made his first-ever donation.

Thank you for remembering. Thank you for giving. Thank you for being there for your community. ❤️

"It was just, you know, the popping in and out of the front of the building, you know, to check the news to see what was going on. And, it was just somber. And then the donors started coming in and they didn't stop, and they just kept coming and going. Because when you're in the middle of a crisis, you feel like you have to do something." Chris Pape, Manager, Hospital Services

"I thought it was a preview for a movie because who would have thought that planes would actually fly into the towers? And I said, what is this in a movie? And she goes, no, this is real." Pam Chandler, Quality Specialist II

In this series, members of our staff reflect on what they remember from that day and how the events of 9/11 shaped their understanding of the lifesaving impact of blood donation.

Their stories remind us that behind every blood donation is an opportunity to help someone in their greatest moment of need.

Today, we remember. We honor those we lost. And we recognize the donors, staff, and communities who came together to help.

🩸 Remember. Honor. Give.

Twenty-five years later, we remember September 11 and the lives forever changed by that day.

In this 25th anniversary reflection, colleagues who were there share what they remember from the uncertainty of that day to the extraordinary generosity of donors who simply wanted to help.

Today, we remember the lives lost and the incredible generosity that followed September 11. And we remember something that remains true 25 years later: blood is needed every day—not only in times of crisis.

To every blood donor who has rolled up their sleeve in a moment of crisis or simply because someone, somewhere, needed them: thank you for continuing that spirit of service.🩸

When O- blood runs low, patient care can’t always move forward.

Surgeries are postponed.
Cancer care is delayed.
Doctors may have to make difficult decisions about limited blood supplies.

We are critically low on O-negative. If you’re O-negative, now is the time to give: https://bit.ly/4f3hS8X
