One of the reasons I love word family sorting is because it helps train the brain to look directly at the vowel …the most important part of the word pattern.
For many students with dyslexia, seeing and processing the middle of the word is often the hardest part. Their eyes may focus on the first or last letter while missing the vowel pattern that determines how the word is read.
They begin to recognize patterns instead of memorizing individual words. This strengthens pattern recognition, which is a critical skill for reading and spelling success.
Even better, when we sort words on the carpet, we’re adding movement and hands-on learning. Students are seeing, touching, moving, and organizing the patterns themselves. This kinesthetic and tactile practice helps make those word patterns stick.
Reading isn’t just about letters, it’s about helping the brain notice patterns. Word family sorting is a simple activity with a powerful impact.
