Rule #3 — Give It Time: Time Heals Everything
We often hear that time heals all wounds, but the truth is more nuanced. Time can pass, but it’s not the passing of days that heals us—it’s what happens within that time.
Our bodies and minds naturally know how to process emotional pain. We do this through talking about what bothers us, dreaming about unresolved experiences, journaling, reflecting, or engaging in practices that help us make sense of what we feel. This processing is what heals us—not the simple passage of time.
Not every difficult or painful experience becomes trauma. When we allow ourselves to feel what hurts, acknowledge it, and move it through the body, we give that pain somewhere to go. But when we don’t allow ourselves to process it—when we bury it or avoid it—it doesn’t disappear. It waits. And no matter how many years pass, when we finally turn toward it, the impact can feel just as sharp as the day it happened.
So the real rule is this: Time itself doesn’t heal. Processing does. Give yourself time to process—to feel, to speak, to make sense of your pain. That’s where the healing truly happens.
