Joseph J. Mastracco

Joseph J. Mastracco, of Ann Street, St. Johnsville, N.Y., passed away on May 18th, 2026. He would have been 102 years old in August of this year.

Joe was born in Canajoharie, N.Y. in 1924, the son of Pietro Marcello Mastracco and Jenovina (Jenny) Nalli, immigrants from Italy. Along with his brother Henry and sister Mary, he was educated in the public schools in St. Johnsville. He would later obtain his associate's degree from Mohawk Valley Community College. As a teenager Joe began working at the local Smalley movie theater, assisting wherever needed. Eventually he would run the projector for the theater, something he would enjoy doing for many decades, whenever time allowed. This led to a lifelong love of old movies, particularly westerns.

In 1943, Joe entered service in the United States Navy and was trained at NTS Sampson in upstate NY. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor as a Fireman 1st Class until his honorable discharge. Upon returning to the states, he began working at the Beech Nut Company in Canajoharie, NY. After retiring from Beech Nut, Joe enjoyed working at the West St. Johnsville Cemetery.

On October 10th, 1953, Joe married Rosalie Finch, a sixth-grade remedial reading teacher at the St. Johnsville elementary school. They remained married for 53 years until Rosalie’s passing in 2007.

Joe Mastracco will be missed by his sons, Gregory Mastracco and wife Lisa of Utica, and Marcus Mastracco and wife Ann of Glenmont. In addition, Joe is survived by his four grandchildren, Kristine and Tim Snyder and Marissa and Allison Mastracco, and his great grandchild, Mason.

A short Graveside service will be held Friday, June 5th, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the West St. Johnsville Cemetery. Per Joe’s wishes, the ceremony will be for family only. Services have been coordinated with the Enea-Ciaccia Family Funeral Directors, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion. NY 13357. 315-894-8000.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to all of Joe’s friends and neighbors who looked after him at his home on Ann Street, and to the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and its staff for the care and compassion shown to Joe.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made either to the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Inc., 7 Timmerman Ave, St. Johnsville, NY 13452 or the American Legion, 38 W Main Street, St. Johnsville, NY, 13452.

Nancy Elizabeth Capek

Nancy Elizabeth Capek, beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her children and grandchildren at the age of 86, on May 10, 2026.

Nancy loved spending time with her family and friends, gardening, cooking, knitting, reading, writing letters, and caring for her animals. Nancy was also a deeply spiritual woman who studied the Bible and felt God’s presence intimately in her daily life. Throughout her life Nancy remained active in the Roman Catholic congregations of the communities where she lived, participating in Bible study groups and teaching Sunday school classes.

All who knew Nancy recognized her rare combination of abundant loving kindness and unstoppable determination. She listened deeply and related to each family member and friend in a way that felt profoundly personal. Even as she faced significant and painful physical limitations later in life, she never wavered in her faith in God and her devotion to others.

Nancy was born in New York City on January 14, 1940, to Frank Hylsky and Anna (Chalus) Hylsky. After graduating from high school, she worked for Young & Rubicam, a leading advertising agency. She married George Edward Capek in New York on September 1, 1959. George was a professor of aeronautical engineering at The Academy of Aeronautics, now Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. Nancy and George were devoted to each other in marriage for over 62 years before George predeceased Nancy on April 3, 2022.

In the early years of their marriage, George and Nancy lived in Syosset, Long Island, where they began to raise their family. Their children Frank William, John Michael, Thomas George, George Edward, and Jeanne Elizabeth were all born on Long Island. Joanne Marie was born after the family relocated to upstate NY.

In 1975, during a Memorial Day weekend trip to a piece of property George and Nancy owned in Ephratah, New York, George was injured in a motorcycle accident. Facing challenges as he recovered and seeking a new direction in life, George and Nancy made the decision to relocate their family upstate and they discovered their shared love of farming. From Ephratah, George and Nancy relocated to Oppenheim in 1980, and then to Herkimer in 2014. In every location, Nancy developed friendships that she cherished for the rest of her life.

As an individual and as a parent, Nancy exemplified focus, determination, hard work, family harmony, and togetherness. These values shaped and were admired by her children and those who became her children by marriage including Janice, Carla, Lisa, Leslie, James Girardy, and Ronald Young II. Nancy’s motherly presence extended to others as well.

Nancy’s values also inspired the strong family orientation and accomplishments of her twenty-four grandchildren including: Daniel, Dominick, Allison, Andy, Rebecca, Kristian, Connor, Leah, Emily, Farrel, Tony, Zachary, Madison, Elizabeth, Gabrielle, Benjamin, Hannah, Lydia, Kelly, Mary, Zachary, Peter, Rachel, and Maggie.

Nancy’s character, leadership, and love leave a legacy that will continue to live on through generations to come. Nancy’s growing list of great-grandchildren include: Chase, Cooper, Cameron, Riley, and Parker.

A memorial service and celebration of Nancy’s life is being planned for this summer. A funeral mass is being held for Nancy on Friday, August 14, 2026 at 11am, at The Holy Family Parish in Little Falls, NY. The mass will followed by a procession to the St. Johnsville cemetery where Nancy’s ashes will be laid to rest next to her husband, George, and grandchildren, Daniel and Dominick. A repass at a local restaurant will follow. All who knew and loved Nancy are invited to attend. The family warmly welcomes remembrances and stories about Nancy from all whose lives she touched.

In lieu of trees or flowers, donations in Nancy’s memory may be made to the March of Dimes. Please visit the link provided below for the March of Dimes Foundation

Nancy supported the March of Dimes for over 65 years, with the family remembering how Nancy would collect dimes from neighbors on Long Island to fill March of Dimes donation cards. Additionally, Nancy and the entire Capek family have been grateful to the March of Dimes as they have personally witnessed the advancements made in healthcare through the highly specialized neonatal care received by Nancy’s grandson Zachary and great-grandchildren Riley and Parker.

Santina C. Wurz

Santina Cecelia “Sandy” Wurz, 94, of Utica, went to be with our Lord in the comfort of her home, with her family by her side, on May 11, 2026.

Sandy was one of three siblings born to Giovanni and Carmella (Rugare) Zangrone of Utica, NY. Santina graduated from Utica Catholic Academy with a Regents Diploma. She worked for over 25 years for General Electric as a buyer, one of the first women to do so. While she was proud to do “a man’s job,” as it was said at the time, she always kept a sense of humor, slipped into her pumps each day, and stayed true to her goal of becoming the best buyer in the company. She achieved that goal. She carried that same momentum into every aspect of her life.

Sandy was also an expert cook, much like her mother, who died when Santina was only 7 years old. She prepared countless Italian and American dishes for friends, family, and all who entered her home. Everyone left with a full and happy stomach. Her Christmas cookies were legendary, as she made hundreds upon hundreds during the holiday season. Food was her love language, and ensuring those she loved were well-fed was deeply important to her.

Santina was always very athletic. She was the captain of her high school cheerleading squad and an avid water skier and tennis player. She was fiercely competitive and wanted to beat anyone she encountered in a sport or game of skill. Sandy was incredibly kind and generous and would have given her left arm to family and friends if they needed it. Santina loved music and dancing. She and her husband, Theodore, would “cut a rug” with their expert rendition of the Jitterbug whenever they went out celebrating.

Santina and Theodore R. Wurz, Sr., were united in marriage in 1950 and shared over 70 wonderful years. Santina had four children and was a true Tiger Mom. God help the person, or persons, who tried to make her children’s or grandchildren’s lives difficult. Santina had a direct line to God through her strong Catholic faith and unwavering prayers. She was the most wonderful mother anyone could ask for.

Sandy’s light will live on through the lessons in love she demonstrated to her family. Her resilience, fighting spirit, hunger for justice, and love for God and family live on in every person who knew and loved her.

It was important to Santina that people knew her story and understood the hardships she endured as a child growing up in an orphanage after the loss of her mother. She never wanted anyone to feel as though they were anything less than the most important person in the world. Even in the face of adversity, she fought to prove herself worthy of every role she took on, and she excelled in every single one.

Her friends and family would like to share a few memories so others may better understand the kind of woman she was. A house was being built next to their property when their son John, being the curious young boy he was, found himself trapped at the bottom of a muddy foundation hole filled with water. Every time he tried to climb out, he slipped back down into the mud. As he frantically called for help, he grew tired and feared he would drown. Moments later, his mother appeared, grabbed his hand, and pulled him out like an angel. She saved his life that day.

Her granddaughter Stacy recalls a story Santina shared about her time in the orphanage. A couple once came to adopt her, and when the nuns informed Sandy, they expected her to be overjoyed. When she learned they could not adopt her sister, Mary, as well, Sandy changed the couple’s minds. She refused to leave her sister behind. From that moment on, she became Mary’s protector.

Her daughter, Mary Rose, would personally like to thank Mom for getting her through the toughest time in her life. Not only did she care for "baby" Mark, but she wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for her fighting spirit. Sandy would have traded places in a heartbeat with Mary Rose when she was battling cancer. Thankfully, the battle was won.

Santina was predeceased by her husband, Theodore R. Wurz; her sister, Mary K. Costello, and brother-in-law Richard Costello; her brother, Anthony Zangrone, and sister-in-law Carol Zangrone; her daughter-in-law, Celeste Wurz; her great-grandson, Johnathan Wurz; and her nephew-in-law, Bob Zaloom. She was also predeceased by her dear friends Connie Ryan and Earlene Zinzerling.

Santina is survived by her four children: Theodore J. and Mary Ann Wurz; John M. and Vivian Wurz; Mary Rose Moon; and David A. and Wendy Wurz. Her grandchildren include Theodore (Loretta) Wurz, Thomas (Karen) Wurz, John (Amanda) Wurz, Stacy (Jason) Alamond, Michael (Maria) Wurz, and Mark Malinowski. Four great-grandchildren also survive her. We would also like to recognize a special bond with her niece, Mary Beth, who loved to chat with Mom and even helped Mary Beth bake cherry cookies when it was difficult for Sandy to bake. Her niece, Laura Zaloom, and Laura and Bob’s children, Michael and Rose, shared an incredible bond that will live forever.

Mary Rose would like to thank caregivers, Yvette, Diana, Lori, Destiny, Mbassy, Brandi, and Gema for their loving and compassionate care for our Mom.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday May 18,2026 at 10:00am at the Historic Old Saint John’s Church, 240 Bleecker Street, Utica, NY, preceding mass, the family will receive guest at 9:30am, until the mass service begins. Sandy will then be laid to rest next to her husband at Crown Hill Memorial Park.

Her family kindly ask you to consider contributions in Santina’s memory to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
