⚠️ Kratom Is Not Safe During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding ⚠️

You may have seen kratom sold as an “energy” drink, tea, or dietary supplement and marketed as a natural alternative to caffeine. While it is legal in many places, “natural” does not mean safe.

Kratom comes from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa plant and contains compounds that act on the brain. At lower doses, it can produce stimulant-like effects, while at higher doses, it can act more like an opioid, causing sedation and slowing breathing. It also has the potential to cause dependence and addiction.

During pregnancy, kratom use has been associated with serious risks, including withdrawal symptoms in newborns after birth. During breastfeeding, the active compounds may pass into breast milk, and the safety for nursing infants has not been established. Because of these concerns, kratom should be avoided during both pregnancy and breastfeeding.

💜 If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, talk with your healthcare provider before taking any herbal supplement or energy product—even those labeled as “natural.”

Let’s work together to keep moms healthy and give babies the safest possible start in life.

💙Hope's Story💙

Some people make a difference every day through the work they do. Others go one step further and continue giving even after their shift is over. 💙

Hope is one of those extraordinary people. As a healthcare provider, she cares for patients with compassion and dedication. As a UAMS Milk Bank donor, she has chosen to share her breast milk to help nourish the smallest and most vulnerable babies when they need it most. 🍼👶

Her generosity reminds us that caring for others doesn't end when the workday does—it becomes a way of life. Through her profession and her gift of donor milk, Hope is helping give families comfort, babies a healthier start, and parents renewed hope during some of their most challenging moments.

Thank you, Hope, for the incredible impact you make every day. You truly embody what it means to care for your community.

💙 Read Hope's story in her own words below.

"I donated breast milk with both of my sons. With my first, the UAMS Milk Bank hadn't been established yet, so the donation process was a little complicated. With my second, donating was simple and accessible, making it even easier to give back. As a NICU nurse at ACH, I have the privilege of seeing firsthand the lifesaving impact donor milk has on our tiniest and most vulnerable babies. Knowing the difference it makes for premature and medically fragile infants makes donating especially meaningful. It's an honor to support these little fighters both at the bedside and by providing the gift of donor milk."

🌙💙 While much of Arkansas sleeps, the dedicated nurses of the UAMS NICU are hard at work caring for our tiniest patients. Every gentle touch, every carefully monitored heartbeat, and every act of compassion helps give premature and critically ill newborns the best possible start. 👶🩺

The UAMS Milk Bank is proud to stand beside these incredible night shift nurses, providing safe, pasteurized donor human milk to fragile infants when their own mother's milk is not yet available or needs to be supplemented. 🍼🤱💙

Together, we support breastfeeding families by protecting the unique benefits of human milk while giving mothers the time, encouragement, and support they need to establish their own milk supply. Every bottle of donor milk represents the generosity of a milk donor and the hope of a healthier future for a baby in the NICU. 🌟💝

To our amazing UAMS NICU night shift team—thank you for your skill, compassion, and unwavering commitment to our smallest patients and their families. Your work truly changes lives, one tiny miracle at a time. 🌙✨💙

💙 One Mother's Extra Milk. Countless Tiny Lives Changed. 💙

Every ounce of donated milk begins with a mother who worked hard to nourish her own baby. Behind every bottle is time, dedication, middle-of-the-night pumping sessions, and an incredible act of generosity.

One of our amazing donors shared exactly why she chose to give:

"I decided to donate my extra milk supply to help other babies! I didnt see a need for it to go to waste in my freezer when it could help someone else!"

To our donor—and to every mother who has shared her extra milk with the UAMS Milk Bank—thank you. Your gift is more than milk. It is hope. It is comfort. It is healing. Your generosity helps provide safe donor human milk to Arkansas' smallest and most medically fragile babies while their own mothers are working to establish their milk supply.

For families with a baby in the NICU, every day can bring uncertainty. Many parents desperately want to provide their own milk but face the stress of premature delivery, illness, or separation from their newborn. Knowing that safe, pasteurized donor human milk is available can provide tremendous reassurance during one of the most difficult times in their lives. It gives these tiny babies the next best source of nutrition while supporting their healthiest possible start.

If you have extra milk stored in your freezer, consider turning those extra ounces into a lifesaving gift for another family. Your donation can help nourish premature and medically fragile infants across Arkansas—and remind another parent that they are not alone.

💙 Please help us spread the word! Share this post with your friends, family, childbirth groups, lactation support groups, and breastfeeding communities. You never know who may have extra milk to share or who may become the next Milk Hero for a baby in need.

💙 Tiny patients. Extraordinary nurses. Lifelong impact. 💙

Every day, our NICU nurses care for Arkansas’ smallest and most vulnerable babies with extraordinary skill, compassion, and dedication. They know that nutrition is more than calories—it is medicine for premature infants.

For babies born too soon, a mother's own milk is one of the most powerful therapies available. It helps support healthy growth and development while reducing the risk of serious complications of prematurity, including life-threatening intestinal disease, severe infections, and other conditions that can impact a baby's future.

When a mother's own milk is not yet available or there is not enough to meet her baby's needs, donor human milk becomes the next safest source of nutrition. Carefully screened, pasteurized, and dispensed under the highest safety standards, donor milk provides a gentle, easily digested feeding that helps protect fragile premature infants during the earliest and most vulnerable days of life. While nothing can replace a mother's own milk, donor milk serves as an important bridge until families can establish their own milk supply.

The nurses featured here proudly wear their UAMS Milk Bank apparel as a symbol of their commitment to breastfeeding families and their support of donor milk as part of evidence-based NICU care. Their dedication reflects a shared mission: giving every baby the healthiest possible start.

The UAMS Milk Bank is honored to partner with the UAMS NICU and hospitals across Arkansas to ensure vulnerable infants have access to safe donor human milk while supporting mothers on their breastfeeding journey.

Together, we're nourishing hope, one tiny baby at a time. 💙

Happy Father’s Day to the dads, grandfathers, bonus dads, partners, fathers-to-be, and father figures who show up every day with love, strength, patience, and support. 💙

Behind so many successful breastfeeding journeys is someone helping carry the load — washing pump parts at midnight, changing diapers, bringing snacks and water during feeds, folding laundry, comforting babies, cheering moms on through hard days, and reminding families they are never alone.

Research continues to show that active father and partner involvement during pregnancy and infancy helps improve breastfeeding success, strengthens maternal mental health, and can even reduce risks of poor maternal and infant health outcomes. But today isn’t about statistics — it’s about celebrating the everyday acts of love that help families thrive.

Whether you’re rocking a baby back to sleep, supporting a NICU journey, helping during pumping sessions, or simply being a steady and caring presence, your role matters more than you know.

Strong fathers help build strong families.
Supported mothers and babies grow healthier together.
And children who are loved deeply grow stronger every day. 💫

Thank you for being protectors, encouragers, helpers, huggers, bottle washers, diaper changers, late-night snack fetchers, and heroes in the lives of your children and families.

Happy Father’s Day from the UAMS Milk Bank. 💙

🌿🧺 International Picnic Day – June 18 🧺🌿

Picnics are about community, comfort, and enjoying life outdoors—and that includes supporting families wherever they are in their feeding journey.

On International Picnic Day, we celebrate the beauty of feeding babies in the way that works best for them, including breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is natural, nourishing, and powerful—and it belongs everywhere babies belong: at the park, at the picnic table, and in the heart of community life.

When we normalize breastfeeding in public, we help create a world where parents feel confident, respected, and supported—not isolated. A simple smile, a kind word, or offering space can make all the difference.

Let’s build a culture where feeding babies is never something to hide, and where every family feels welcome to nourish their child with dignity—anytime, anywhere.

💙 Support breastfeeding.
💙 Respect feeding journeys.
💙 Celebrate families in every space we share.
