Finishing breast cancer treatment doesn't always mean the body is finished healing.

For some patients, radiation therapy can cause lasting damage to healthy tissue, sometimes leading to complications months or even years after treatment.

At Hill Country Wound Care & Hyperbarics, we understand that these challenges can be an important part of recovery.

For certain radiation-related tissue injuries, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may help support healing as part of an individualized, physician-led treatment plan.

Better care happens when the people caring for our community stay connected. ๐Ÿ’š

We had a great time at the recent Senior Expo in San Antonio, where healthcare providers and community organizations came together to share resources, learn from one another, and connect directly with the people we serve.

For our team, events like this are about more than introducing Hill Country. They're an opportunity to better understand the resources available to our patients and build relationships with organizations that may be part of their care journey.

We enjoyed connecting with Fyzical Therapy and Balance, Thrive 210, Health 210 Primary Care Clinic, PAM Health Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital, and many other local organizations to learn more about each other's services and how we can work together to provide more connected, coordinated care.

Jade and Yessenia represented Hill Country throughout the event, meeting with patients and families, answering questions, and sharing our mission and the role specialized wound care can play when a wound isn't healing as expected.

Because caring for a patient doesn't happen in isolation. The stronger our connections are across the San Antonio healthcare community, the better we can help patients find the right resources when they need them.

Your legs may be telling you something before a wound ever develops.

Swelling that keeps coming back. Changes in the color or texture of your skin. Aching or a feeling of heaviness in your legs.

When changes happen gradually, they're easy to brush off or simply get used to. But persistent changes are worth paying attention to.

These symptoms can have many causes, but they may also be signs that circulation or another health factor deserves a closer look. And when circulation isn't working as it should, it can affect the health of the skin and tissue in your legs, as well as your body's ability to heal if a wound develops.

As Vascular Disease Awareness Month comes to a close, there's one message we hope patients and families carry with them beyond September.

Pay attention when something changes.

You don't have to wait for a problem to become severe before asking questions. If you're noticing persistent swelling, skin changes, aching, or heaviness, talk with your healthcare provider.

And if you already have a leg or foot wound that isn't getting better, keeps coming back, or has been difficult to heal, our physician-led wound care team can help look beyond the wound to understand what may be standing in the way of healing.

A wound needs more than time to heal. It needs healthy blood flow.

Your blood carries the oxygen and nutrients your body needs to repair damaged tissue. When circulation isn't working as it should, a wound, especially on the leg or foot, may take longer to heal, become more difficult to treat, or keep coming back.

And sometimes, a wound that isn't healing as expected can be a sign that something more is affecting the healing process.

That's why good wound care doesn't stop at the wound itself.

Our physician-led team looks at the factors that may be standing in the way of healing, including circulation, overall health, and other conditions, to better understand why a wound isn't getting better and determine the right path forward.

Antonyo came to Hill Country with a diabetic ulcer on his right foot. But before treatment began, his physician took the time to sit with him, understand his situation, talk through the options, and determine what made sense for him.

Two wounds can appear in the same place and need very different care.

Venous and arterial wounds can both develop on the legs and feet, but they happen for very different reasons.

Venous wounds often relate to problems with blood returning from the legs to the heart, which can lead to swelling and changes in the skin over time.

Arterial wounds develop when not enough blood flows to the tissue, limiting the oxygen and nutrients needed for healing.

That difference matters.

A treatment that's appropriate for one type of wound may not be appropriate for another.

That's why good wound care starts by understanding why the wound developed, not simply treating what you can see on the surface.

That's especially important during Vascular Disease Awareness Month, because a wound that isn't healing may be telling us something about the circulation beneath it.

For Roy, healing meant getting back to his normal, active life. ๐Ÿ’š

When Roy McDaniel first came to Hill Country, he was dealing with a wound that wasn't healing and wasn't sure what to expect.
