Almost everyone I see with a “bad back” is blaming the wrong thing. Most of the time, the low back isn’t the primary problem — it’s the area compensating for hips that don’t extend, a thoracic spine that doesn’t rotate, or ankles that don’t load properly. When one joint stops moving well, another one works overtime. Overtime turns into irritation. Irritation turns into pain. So people stretch their back, rest for a week, and wonder why it keeps flaring up. It’s not because your back is weak. It’s because something else isn’t moving. Fix the restriction, and the back usually settles down fast. Follow along for some stretches coming up next.

Most busy athlete parents assume low back pain is just part of training — especially when you’re lifting at 5am, working all day, and chasing kids at night. But here’s what’s actually happening: your low back is usually compensating for something that isn’t moving well — hips, thoracic spine, or even ankle restriction. So you stretch your back. Foam roll it. Maybe rest a few days. It feels better… until you load it again. Low back pain isn’t a badge of honor. It’s a signal. And most of the time, it’s fixable without quitting training. You don’t need to slow down — you need the right motion restored.

If your back feels fine warming up…
then tightens up as the workout goes on…
That’s not bad luck.
That’s fatigue exposing a weak link somewhere else.
As your body gets tired, it falls back on compensation patterns it’s learned over time — and the low back often ends up doing more than its share.
This is why pain often shows up during the workout, not before.
Understanding this is the difference between guessing and actually fixing the issue.

Rest has its place.
But it’s not a long-term strategy for people who plan to keep moving.

Most of the people I work with don’t want to stop training —
they just want their body to stop fighting them.

That happens when you restore motion and function where it’s missing — not when you avoid movement altogether.

If you’ve been stuck in the rest → flare-up → repeat cycle, this is your sign to rethink the approach.

It means your body has been compensating for a while.

If your low back tightens up every time you lift, it’s easy to assume your back is the problem.

But most of the time?

It’s just the place paying the price.

I see this constantly with people who train hard — especially busy parents and athletes who lift early mornings or late nights and just push through.

When something stops moving the way it should (hips, mid-back, even ankles), your body finds a workaround.

And the low back usually takes the hit.

That doesn’t mean you’re broken.

It means your body is compensating.

The fix isn’t “stop lifting.”

It’s figuring out why your back is doing extra work — and taking the load off it.
