Remembering September 11th

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the families, friends, and communities forever changed by that day.

We honor the courage of the first responders, the strength of those who served, and the countless acts of compassion and kindness that followed.

May we never forget. ❤️🤍💙

For Nan, relationships have always been at the heart of hospice care.

“That’s the power of Hospice. It’s a gift to people. It’s sad that more people don’t recognize it soon enough - how Hospice can help.”

Over the years, Nan’s volunteer service extended beyond patient care to include the Hospice Grief Center, where she supported families following the loss of a loved one. One woman in particular remains with her. A widow who was struggling deeply, she felt very alone. Nan recognized her need and did everything she could to help connect her with the support she needed.

Moments like that - and the many relationships she built along the way - reinforced Nan’s belief that hospice volunteering was her calling.

This Week's Volunteer Spotlight! - Teresa Oleyourryk

Question 1: What inspired you to volunteer with us?
Answer 1: As a hospice employee, I was impressed by the level of compassion of the nurses as well as the volunteers. They consistently went above and beyond the typical expectations, and their selfless service aligned with my own values. Throughout my nearly twenty years of service, I have gained wisdom and insight into the journey that families go through when a family member is terminally ill.

Question 2: What's your favorite part about this cause/organization?
Answer 2: My favorite part is the ability to give respite to the caregivers. I enjoy our conversations, as well as hearing their perspectives and stories. Throughout my own life, I have had the opportunity to act as a caregiver, so I know the value of providing time for families to recharge.

Question 3: What do you hope to gain or give back through this experience?
Answer 3: Through this experience, I hope to show others they do not have to navigate this difficult journey on their own. We are able to share the load, work as a team, and provide support for all. I hope to provide not only respite and care, but also a listening ear.

Question 4: What's your most impactful volunteer memory?
Answer 4: One of my fondest memories is when I had the opportunity to volunteer with one of my very first patients. From the beginning, I truly connected with both the patient and his family as well, right down to the family's dog.

Question 5: What do you do for fun outside of volunteering?
Answer 5: In my spare time, I enjoy reading, playing BINGO, and spending time with my four grandchildren.
