Most people wait an average of 7 years before seeking help for hearing loss, and in that time, it can begin to affect much more than hearing.
Untreated hearing loss can place added strain on the brain, impact communication, and lead to gradual social withdrawal over time.
At Hearing Doctors of New Jersey, we use the H.E.A.R. Method Treatment Program to evaluate the full picture and create care plans based on your lifestyle and needs.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of presenting on “The Healthy Brain: Preventing Cognitive Decline” at Sage Eldercare.

One message I hope everyone took away from our conversation is that brain health deserves attention at every age. There are meaningful steps we can take throughout our lives to support cognitive health and reduce our risk of dementia.

One of the most important—and often overlooked—steps is addressing hearing loss. Treating hearing loss is considered the #1 modifiable risk factor for preventing dementia, making hearing health an essential part of brain health.

In fact, a recent World Health Organization (WHO) report highlighted that as many as 45% of dementia cases worldwide may be considered preventable by addressing modifiable risk factors.

The takeaway is clear: it’s never too early—or too late—to prioritize your brain health. From managing hearing loss to staying physically and socially active and addressing other health and lifestyle factors, the choices we make can have a meaningful impact.

A special thank you to Michael McTigue and Laura Harper for inviting me to speak and for creating an opportunity to have this important conversation with the Sage Eldercare community.

Let’s keep the conversation going—and keep prioritizing brain health at every age.

July 22nd is World Brain Day, and your ears have more to do with it than you think.

Research shows that untreated hearing loss can increase your risk of dementia by up to 500%. Why? Because when your ears struggle, your brain works harder just to process sound, leaving less capacity for memory, focus, and thinking clearly.

Protecting your hearing isn't just about hearing better. It's about keeping your brain sharp for years to come.

This World Brain Day, give your brain the attention it deserves. Give us a call today at (973) 577-4100 or book your appointment online.

Did you know?

Treating hearing loss can actually help prevent falls in older adults.
When your hearing is compromised, so is your spatial awareness and balance, making everyday moments like walking down stairs or stepping outside much riskier than they should be.

The good news? Addressing your hearing health can make a real difference in your stability and confidence on your feet.

Start your journey today by giving us a call at (973) 577-4100.

🧠 The World Health Organization has updated its dementia prevention guidelines—and hearing loss is once again on the list.

For years, we’ve talked about the powerful connection between hearing and brain health. It’s encouraging to see the World Health Organization reinforce what decades of research have shown: treating hearing loss is an important part of protecting cognitive health.

The WHO now recommends addressing several modifiable risk factors that may help reduce or delay the risk of dementia, including:

👂 Treat hearing loss
🚶 Stay physically active
🥗 Eat a healthy, balanced diet
❤️ Manage blood pressure, diabetes & cholesterol
🚭 Don’t smoke
🍷 Limit alcohol consumption
🧠 Keep your brain challenged
🤝 Stay socially connected
🌿 Reduce exposure to air pollution

The takeaway? Brain health isn’t about one big decision—it’s about small, consistent choices that add up over time.

If you or someone you love has been turning up the TV, asking others to repeat themselves, or avoiding conversations because it’s difficult to hear, don’t wait. Treating hearing loss isn’t just about hearing better—it may also be one of the most important steps you can take to support your long-term brain health.

"There's nothing you can do about the ringing." Sound familiar?

That's simply not true. Tinnitus is a progressive condition that affects your brain, your sleep, and even your relationships, but it can be medically treated.

The H.E.A.R. Method™ Tinnitus Relief Program includes a clinically proven listening program built by experts who live with tinnitus themselves, because they get it.

🧬✨ This is the kind of hearing research that gets us excited!

At Hearing Doctors of New Jersey, we're always keeping an eye on the latest advances in hearing healthcare—and this one is especially promising.

Researchers have reported encouraging results using gene therapy to treat certain inherited forms of deafness and balance disorders. While this research is still in its early stages and isn't available as a treatment yet, it's an important step toward the possibility of treating the underlying genetic cause of these conditions.

It's important to note that this research only applies to people with hearing loss and balance disorders caused by inherited genetic conditions. It does not apply to the more common types of hearing loss related to aging, noise exposure, illness, or other non-genetic causes.

Although there's still more work to be done before this reaches patients, breakthroughs like this give us hope for the future. We look forward to seeing where this research leads and what it could mean for families affected by inherited hearing loss.

We'll continue to share exciting developments as they happen!
