Q: How can communities—friends, family, and coworkers—better support men who may be struggling with mental health?

A: "Community remains one of the strongest protective factors available. When connection is present–when people feel they belong, when they feel seen and supported–the impact is meaningful. It can change how stress is managed and how challenges are faced.” ~Christopher Spromberg, Psy.D

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death for men, but understanding your health numbers can be one of the most important steps in prevention.

In recognition of Men's Health Month, Livingston HealthCare Internal Medicine provider Carson King, AG-ACNP, shares why it's important to know your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and other key health indicators—and how regular preventive care can help identify risks before they become serious health concerns.

Taking charge of your health starts with knowing where you stand.

A helmet is one of the simplest pieces of safety equipment you can wear, but it can make a life-changing difference.

Traumatic brain injuries can happen in an instant during activities like biking, skiing, snowboarding, horseback riding, skateboarding, or scooter riding. While accidents aren't always preventable, wearing a properly fitted helmet can significantly reduce the risk of serious head injury.

One of the most common reasons people skip a helmet is because they're "just going a short distance." But injuries don't depend on how far you're traveling. Many serious falls happen close to home during routine activities.

This summer, make helmet safety a habit. It only takes a few seconds to put on, and it protects something irreplaceable.

Foot and Ankle Safety on the River
By Andrew Rice, DPM, FACFAS, Podiatric Medicine and Surgery

Rivers add a unique set of hazards to feet and ankles, from slippery rocks to hidden debris and cold water. Bare feet may feel free, but they leave you vulnerable to cuts, bruises, and fractures. Well‑fitting river footwear with solid traction and heel security are critical. Avoid flip‑flops or loose sandals that can twist or snag and increase injury risk. Cold water can also reduce sensation and reaction time, making ankles more prone to missteps. Take extra care when entering and exiting the river, when many injuries occur.

Sleep plays a major role in overall health, yet many men consistently sacrifice rest because of work, stress, or busy schedules. Poor sleep can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, weight gain, and difficulty concentrating.

Healthy sleep is not a luxury—it is part of caring for your body and mind. Aim for consistent sleep, reduce screen time before bed, and talk with your provider if fatigue or poor sleep becomes persistent.

Your health depends on rest, too

Many men are taught to push through stress, exhaustion, or anxiety without talking about it. But mental health is just as important as physical health.

Depression, anxiety, burnout, and emotional stress can affect anyone, and seeking support is a sign of strength—not weakness. Whether it’s talking with a provider, reaching out to someone you trust, or taking time to care for yourself, support matters.

Get the support you need. Schedule an appointment with your provider by calling 406.222.3541

Q: What progress in men’s health makes you most hopeful for the future?

A: “Something I think is hopeful is that more men are willing to seek healthcare, moving away from the old mindset of ignoring problems and hoping they resolve on their own. As men become more comfortable discussing their well-being it
helps build a supportive and open culture around men’s health.” ~Carson King, AG-ACNP
