Stroke rehab is rarely about working on just one thing at a time. 💥

Don experienced a stroke in August 2023 and has been dedicated to his recovery & improving his quality of life.

When he first began his recovery, he relied on a wheelchair for community mobility. Today, he’s walking with a front-wheeled walker & continuing to build on that progress. 👏

During this OT circuit, every station has a purpose:

🔹 Reaching across midline with a calibrated hand gripper 👉 trunk rotation, weight shifting, sustained grasp, proprioception & balance

🔹 Navigating hurdles while walking 👉 coordination, mobility & obstacle negotiation

🔹 Playing Hangman 👉 cognition, problem-solving, word retrieval & handwriting while incorporating functional use of his affected right arm

One activity, many skills! All working toward greater independence in everyday life.

Great work, Don! 👏❤️

Exciting staffing update 🚨

We would love to introduce to you, Andrew Weiss, PT, DPT. 👋

Andrew earned his degree from the University of Miami FL before beginning his career in Cleveland. Now, he’s bringing his passion for neurologic rehabilitation to TRP!

What drew him to the neuro field? The challenge.🔥
Neurologic rehab is complex, constantly evolving & incredibly rewarding. He loves helping individuals achieve meaningful progress & functional changes that impact everyday life.

As he begins this next chapter, he’s most excited to continue growing as a clinician, embracing new challenges & finding creative ways to make rehab both effective and fun.

💚❤️Outside the clinic, you’ll likely find him on the ice playing hockey, cheering on Michigan State & the Red Wings, or gathered around a table playing cards with friends. If there’s a deck involved, there’s a good chance a game of euchre isn’t far behind.

We’re excited to have him on board, be sure to say hello & help us give Andrew a warm TRP welcome! 👏❤️

Recovery starts at the door 🚪❤️

Before therapy even began, Gary was already putting his hard work into action. 💪

💬After experiencing global aphasia following a stroke, he worked through the check-in process independently using our mobile system.

A simple task for many, but a powerful reminder that recovery is often measured in the everyday moments.

Being able to navigate everyday tasks or manage things such as appointments for yourself/loved ones with greater confidence & independence is exactly the kind of progress we love to celebrate!🎉

We’re proud of you, Gary! 👏

A new way to regain independence 👏

Estelle is living with MS & has gradually decreased her ability to independently steer her power wheelchair.

During this session, she trialed a wheelchair with chin controls technology, allowing her to navigate her environment in a new way with greater independence.

For individuals living with progressive neurologic conditions, independence is about more than mobility. It’s about the freedom to move through daily life with confidence & autonomy!

At TRP, our therapists help identify challenges, explore resources & trial adaptive equipment to find the best fit for each person’s goals.

Sometimes the right tool can make all the difference.

Way to go, Estelle! We’re honored to be part of your journey. ❤️

Special Olympics training got a little competitive 👀

Travis is a brain injury survivor who has been preparing for bocce ball competition, and let’s just say he wasn’t about to give his therapist an easy win.

Using beanbags to stimulate the game, this was an opportunity to practice:

🎯 Throwing accuracy
🧠 Learning & recalling the rules of the game

✅ Keeping track of scoring
✅️ Balance & coordination
✅ Decision-making & strategy

The best part? The running commentary between throws 😂

Final score:
Travis: 1
PT Cam: 0

And as Travis would probably tell you…

The scoreboard doesn’t lie. 🏆👏

Personal goals being achieved, that’s the TRP difference ✨

🔵High plank + Color Catch app = a full neuro workout disguised as a game similar to Simon Says 🎯

Andrew has to tap colored dots corresponding with the randomized color called out by the app all while holding his plank.

🗣️And it doesn’t stop there! His SLP challenged him to say the color out loud as he taps it.

Why?

For a stroke survivor, this exercise hits:
✔️ Core stability & trunk control
✔️ Weight-bearing through the affected side
✔️ Hand-eye/foot-eye coordination under fatigue
✔️ Cognitive load + motor output simultaneously
✔️ Speech initiation + vocal coordination under physical stress

Every tap is a message from the brain saying “I remember how to do this.” Every spoken word is another. The more we repeat it, the stronger that signal gets.

🧠That’s neuroplasticity.

Keep showing up, Andrew. 💪
