Your Top Medicare Questions
Answered by Samantha Lewis

Q: Can I change my plan every year?
A: Yes. Medicare has annual enrollment periods (Oct 15 – Dec 7) where you can switch between Advantage plans or from Advantage back to Original Medicare. Supplement switching has more rules.

Q: Does Medicare cover dental and vision?
A: Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental or vision. Many Medicare Advantage plans include these benefits. This is an important comparison point when choosing.

Q: What if I travel or live part of the year in another state?
A: Original Medicare + Medigap offers the broadest geographic flexibility. Medicare Advantage plans are network-based and may have limited out-of-area coverage.

Q: Can my spouse and I be on different plans?
A: Yes. Medicare is individual β€” each person makes their own choices. A plan that's right for one spouse may not be right for the other. Samantha reviews both situations together.

Q: Is Medicare free?
A: Part A is usually free (if you paid Medicare taxes for 10+ years). Part B has a standard monthly premium (~$175 in 2026, income-adjusted). Advantage and Supplement plans have additional costs.

We've seen some wild, windy weather in Michigan these past couple of days. If your home or car were damaged in the storms, it may be time to file a claim with your insurance company. Follow these steps to make your claims process an easy one:

1. Safety first! Make sure the damaged area is safe to approach. If you think there may be a power line involved, stop and report it to your power company.

2. Take photos. Don't wait until after you start cleaning up and clearing things away. Take pictures before you touch anything.

3. Take steps to prevent more damage. Protect undamaged property to the best of your ability.

4. Call your insurance company. Many companies allow you to start a claim on their app to make things more convenient.

5. Keep your receipts. This includes anything you used to clean up or prevent further damage.

If you need help with your claims process, call your agent. We're always happy to help.

Did you know most homeowners' insurance policies cover spoiled food from a power outage? If you just lost a whole fridge or freezer of food because of the recent storms, now is a good time to give your insurance agent a call to find out what's covered.

Medicare Enrollment Mistakes
That Cost Michigan Seniors Money (And How to Avoid Them)

Mistake 1: Missing Your Initial Enrollment Window
You have a 7-month window around your 65th birthday. Miss it without a qualifying exception, and you pay a permanent late enrollment penalty for Part B.

Mistake 2: Assuming Employer Coverage Counts Forever
If you delay Medicare because you have employer coverage, that's fine β€” but you must enroll within 8 months of losing that coverage. Many people miss this deadline.

Mistake 3: Skipping Part D (Drug Coverage)
If you don't enroll in a drug plan when first eligible and don't have other creditable coverage, you'll pay a permanent penalty when you eventually do enroll.

Mistake 4: Picking the Cheapest Plan Without Reading It
The lowest-premium Medicare Advantage plan may not include your doctors, your pharmacy, or your specialist. Always verify network coverage before enrolling.

The Good News: It's a 12-Month Decision
Medicare has annual enrollment periods. The first choice you make isn't permanent β€” you can adjust annually. Making an informed first choice just gives you the best starting point.

Don't let a mistake follow you for the rest of your Medicare years.
Call Samantha for guidance β€” at no cost to you.

Your Medicare Transition Timeline
What to Expect and When to Act

Age 63: Start the Conversation
This is Samantha's recommended starting point β€” before the mail floods in, before friends start giving conflicting advice, and before the pressure sets in.

Age 64: Narrow Your Options
By 64, you should have a clear sense of what Medicare Advantage vs. Supplement means for your specific health situation and budget.

3 Months Before 65: Enroll
Your Initial Enrollment Period starts 3 months before the month you turn 65. Enrolling on time avoids penalties and gaps in coverage.

65: Coverage Begins
If enrolled on time, Medicare coverage typically begins the month you turn 65. This is when you activate your supplemental or Advantage plan as well.

Still Working at 65?
If you have employer coverage, you can delay Medicare without penalty. You'll have a Special Enrollment Period when you eventually retire. But confirm with Samantha first.

Don't navigate Medicare alone.

Medicare 101
A Plain-English Guide for Michigan Residents Approaching 65

Start Here: Parts A & B
Part A = Hospital coverage. Part B = Medical/doctor coverage. Together they're 'Original Medicare' β€” your foundation. You turn them on through Social Security at 65.

The 80/20 Problem
Original Medicare pays about 80% of covered costs. That remaining 20% is yours β€” and in a serious health event, it can reach tens of thousands of dollars fast.

Option 1: Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
A Medigap plan covers the 20% gap β€” often with very low or zero out-of-pocket for covered services. Higher monthly premium, but maximum predictability.

Option 2: Medicare Advantage (Part C)
Bundles Parts A, B, and usually D (drug coverage) into one plan. Often lower premiums than Medigap but with network restrictions and copays.

Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage
Whether you choose Original Medicare + Medigap OR Medicare Advantage, make sure drug coverage is part of your plan. Missing this is a very common and costly oversight.
