šŸ„– **"That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep."** — *1 Corinthians 11:30*

This is one of the most sobering verses in the New Testament.

Paul wasn't saying that food itself was evil. He was rebuking the Corinthians for approaching the Lord's Supper with selfish hearts and without recognizing the sacredness of what they were consuming. Their choices had consequences.

It raises an interesting question for us today:

**Do we truly discern the body God has entrusted to us?**

Every day we make choices about what we "eat and drink."

Too often, our plates are filled with:
šŸ© Ultra-processed foods
🄤 Sugary drinks
šŸŸ Refined carbohydrates
šŸ¬ Artificial ingredients

These foods are linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, chronic inflammation, and many of the illnesses affecting millions today.

Now compare that with the foods God created:

🄩 Quality protein
🄬 Vegetables
šŸ“ Fruit
🄜 Nuts and seeds
šŸ«’ Healthy fats
šŸ’§ Pure water

The Bible doesn't teach that eating processed food is a sin. But it does teach that **our choices have consequences** and that our bodies are gifts to be stewarded wisely.

šŸ“– *"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit... Therefore honor God with your bodies."* (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)

God gave us one body. Every meal is an opportunity to nourish it—or slowly wear it down.

Choose the foods God created more often than the foods manufactured in a factory.

Your future self will thank you.

🧠 Is Your Brain Aging… or Just Running Out of Fuel?

Most people think memory loss is just part of getting older.

But growing research suggests that your brain’s metabolism may play a much bigger role than your birthday.

Your brain uses about 20% of your body’s energy, even though it only makes up about 2% of your body weight. When that energy supply is disrupted, brain function can begin to suffer.

Here’s one way researchers think cognitive decline may develop:

⚔ Stage 1: Reduced Brain Energy
You may notice more mental fatigue, brain fog, or difficulty concentrating.

🧠 Stage 2: Memory Centers Become Vulnerable
The hippocampus—the part of your brain involved in forming new memories—may begin to lose volume over time, while abnormal proteins can accumulate.

ā“ Stage 3: Noticeable Memory Changes
Forgetting names, struggling to learn new information, or becoming more forgetful may begin years before serious cognitive problems appear.

One major contributor appears to be insulin resistance.

When blood sugar stays elevated over time, brain cells may become less efficient at using glucose for energy. Some researchers have even referred to this process as ā€œtype 3 diabetes,ā€ although this is not an official medical diagnosis and remains a research term rather than a recognized disease.

Another nutrient worth paying attention to is vitamin B1 (thiamine).

Thiamine plays an essential role in helping your mitochondria—the tiny ā€œpower plantsā€ inside your cells—turn food into usable energy. Diets high in refined carbohydrates may increase the body’s need for thiamine, making adequate intake even more important.

What can you do to support your brain?

🄩 Prioritize whole, nutrient-dense foods

šŸ“ Cut back on refined sugars and ultra-processed carbohydrates

🚶 Exercise regularly to improve insulin sensitivity

ā° Consider intermittent fasting if it’s appropriate for you

😓 Protect your sleep—your brain performs important maintenance while you rest

🧠 Talk with your healthcare provider before starting supplements like thiamine or benfotiamine, especially if you have medical conditions or take medications.

Your brain isn’t just influenced by age.

It’s influenced every day by how well you nourish it.

At Stanly Wellness Center, we believe lasting health starts by supporting the body’s ability to function at its best—including the nervous system.

šŸ‘” Happy Father’s Day.

Today, I want to honor the men who quietly carry the weight of being a father.

To the dads who get up early, work hard, provide for their families, show up for ball games, fix what’s broken, offer wisdom, and love their children even when it’s difficult…

Thank you. Your sacrifices often go unnoticed, but they matter more than you may ever know.

Being a father isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about being present.

And to the fathers who know they’ve fallen short…

Maybe you’ve missed important moments.
Maybe your relationship with your children isn’t what you wish it was.
Maybe you’ve made mistakes you can’t take back.

Today isn’t about guilt.
It’s about opportunity.

No matter your past, you can choose to become the father your children need today. A phone call, an apology, a hug, a conversation, or simply showing up can begin rebuilding what time has worn down.

Children don’t need perfect fathers.
They need fathers who keep choosing to love, lead, and grow.

As a Christian, I’m reminded of the example our Heavenly Father gives us—full of truth, grace, patience, and unconditional love. We may never measure up completely, but we can strive to reflect those qualities in our own homes.

So today, let’s celebrate the fathers who faithfully serve their families…
And encourage those who still have time to write a better chapter.

One final thought…

Being a great father also means taking care of yourself.

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Your family needs more than your paycheck—they need your presence, your health, your patience, your strength, and your energy.

At Stanly Wellness Center, we’re honored to help dads in Stanly County move better, feel better, and function at their best, so they can continue showing up for the people who need them most.

šŸ’Ŗ The Muscle You Build Today May Protect Your Heart… and Your Brain Tomorrow

Most people think stronger legs are just about walking easier or lifting more in the gym.

But research suggests they may be doing something far more important.

A large study published in the BMJ followed nearly 3,000 adults for over 12 years and found that people with larger thigh circumference had a significantly lower risk of heart disease and premature death. The greatest risk was seen in individuals whose thighs measured less than about 24 inches (60 cm). While body fat and genetics play a role, having adequate muscle mass in your legs appears to be protective.

Even more fascinating…

A second study followed older female twins for 10 years and discovered that leg power—not just leg size—was one of the strongest predictors of healthy brain aging. Those with greater leg strength and power experienced less cognitive decline over the following decade, even after accounting for genetics and lifestyle.

Why might this happen?

🦵 Strong leg muscles improve insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation.

ā¤ļø They help support healthy blood flow and cardiovascular function.

🧠 Exercise stimulates the release of molecules called myokines, which communicate with the brain and may help protect neurons and support memory.

🩸 Better circulation means more oxygen and nutrients reach both your heart and your brain.

The takeaway?

Don’t skip leg day.

You don’t need to become a powerlifter. Consistent walking, squats, lunges, step-ups, cycling, and resistance training can all help build stronger legs—and potentially support a healthier heart and sharper mind as you age.

Your legs aren’t just carrying you through life…

They may be helping determine how well you live it.

šŸ‘‡ What are you doing this week to build stronger legs? Let me know in the comments!

šŸŒ… Your Gut Has a Morning Routine… Do You?

Most people wake up and immediately reach for coffee.

ā˜• But your digestive system has a different plan.

Within 30–45 minutes of waking, your body experiences something called the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR)—a normal surge in cortisol that helps wake you up, increases stomach acid production, and prepares your digestive system for the day.

What you do during that first hour may influence your energy, digestion, and even your gut microbiome.

Here’s a science-based morning sequence worth considering:

šŸ’§ 1. Hydrate First
Drink 10–16 oz (300–500 mL) of water soon after waking. Overnight, you’re mildly dehydrated, and water helps stimulate digestion and normal bowel movement.

ā˜• 2. Delay Your Coffee
Instead of drinking coffee immediately, consider waiting 30–90 minutes after waking. Some evidence suggests this may reduce stomach irritation in sensitive individuals and allow your body’s natural cortisol rhythm to do its job before adding caffeine.

🄣 3. Build a Better Breakfast
If you eat breakfast, aim for foods that nourish both you and your gut bacteria:

āœ… 25–40 grams of quality protein (eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese)
āœ… Prebiotic fiber (oats, chia seeds, flaxseed)
āœ… Fermented foods (plain yogurt or kefir) to support a diverse microbiome

🦠 Did you know?

Your gut is home to roughly 38 trillion microorganisms that help regulate immune function, produce vitamins, and manufacture many important signaling molecules—including most of the body’s serotonin.

āš ļø Common mistakes:

āŒ Sugary cereals and fruit juice that spike blood sugar before the inevitable crash.
āŒ Coffee on an empty stomach if you’re prone to reflux or digestive discomfort.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s giving your body the environment it evolved to thrive in.

Small morning habits repeated consistently often produce the biggest long-term health benefits.

šŸ«€ ARE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE TAKING A HEART MEDICATION THEY MAY NO LONGER NEED?

For decades, if you had a heart attack, chances are you left the hospital with a beta blocker.

That was considered standard care.

But medicine evolves—and so should our recommendations.

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine followed more than 8,500 patients who had an uncomplicated heart attack and normal heart pumping function. Researchers found that taking a beta blocker did not reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, or hospitalization for heart failure over nearly four years compared with not taking one.

A second analysis published in the European Heart Journal looked even deeper.

Among women with normal heart function, those taking beta blockers actually experienced a higher rate of death, recurrent heart attack, or heart failure compared with women who did not receive the medication.

So why the change?

When beta blockers first became routine after heart attacks, treatment was very different.

Today, blocked arteries are often opened quickly with emergency procedures, and patients routinely receive statins, antiplatelet medications, ACE inhibitors, and other evidence-based therapies. Because modern treatment has improved so dramatically, the added benefit of beta blockers appears to be much smaller for patients who recover with normal heart function after an uncomplicated heart attack.

āš ļø This does NOT mean beta blockers are bad.

They remain lifesaving for many people, including those with:

ā¤ļø Heart failure
ā¤ļø Reduced pumping function
ā¤ļø Certain abnormal heart rhythms
ā¤ļø High blood pressure or other specific cardiac conditions

The key lesson?

Healthcare should never be ā€œone size fits all.ā€

The best treatment is the one that matches your individual condition, not simply what has always been done.

If you’re taking a beta blocker, do NOT stop it on your own. Talk with your cardiologist or primary care physician and ask whether current evidence suggests it’s still the right medication for your specific situation.

Science doesn’t stand still—and neither should healthcare.

šŸ‘‡ Have you or someone you know been prescribed a beta blocker after a heart attack? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

šŸ«šŸŒ Could Your ā€œHealthyā€ Smoothie Be Canceling Out Some of Its Own Benefits?

Most people think adding more fruit always makes a smoothie healthier.

But science says it’s not just WHAT you eat… it’s WHAT you eat TOGETHER.

A fascinating study published in Food & Function found that adding just one banana to a smoothie rich in berries dramatically reduced the body’s absorption of beneficial compounds called flavanols.

Why?

Bananas contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase (PPO)—the same enzyme that causes a banana to turn brown after it’s peeled. Researchers found this enzyme rapidly breaks down flavanols, reducing their absorption by about 84% compared to a berry smoothie or a flavanol capsule.

Why should you care?

Flavanols have been associated with supporting:

ā¤ļø Healthy blood vessels
🧠 Brain function and cognition
šŸ”„ Healthy inflammatory balance
🩸 Cardiovascular health

This doesn’t mean bananas are unhealthy—they’re still an excellent source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, and natural carbohydrates.

It simply means your food combinations matter.

āœ… If your goal is maximizing flavanol intake from:
• Blueberries
• Blackberries
• Apples
• Cocoa
• Green tea

…consider blending them with lower-PPO fruits like:
šŸ Pineapple
šŸŠ Orange
🄭 Mango

…and enjoy your banana as a snack later.

Sometimes better nutrition isn’t about eating more—it’s about combining foods more intelligently.

🧠 TIRED ALL THE TIME? IT MIGHT NOT BE YOUR AGE.

When most people think about fatigue, they blame stress, lack of sleep, or getting older.

But what if part of the problem is happening at the cellular level?

A recent study published in Nutrients followed over 600 adults and found that higher levels of homocysteine—a marker often associated with low vitamin B12 and folate status—were linked to greater physical fatigue in men and lower motivation in women.

Why does that matter?

B12 and folate play a critical role in a process called methylation. Methylation is involved in:

⚔ Energy production

🧠 Brain function

😊 Neurotransmitter production (dopamine and serotonin)

ā¤ļø Cardiovascular health

🧬 DNA repair and cellular maintenance

When methylation isn't functioning efficiently, homocysteine levels can rise, and the body's ability to produce energy and support optimal brain function may suffer.

While this study does not prove that low B12 or folate directly cause fatigue, it adds to a growing body of research suggesting that nutrient status may influence how energetic, motivated, and mentally sharp we feel.

If you're constantly fatigued despite getting adequate sleep, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider whether testing markers such as B12, folate, homocysteine, and methylation-related nutrients could provide additional insight.

Remember: Sometimes the body isn't lacking effort—it may simply be lacking the building blocks it needs to function at its best.

The study found associations, not proof of cause and effect, but it highlights an often-overlooked connection between nutrient status, brain function, and energy levels.

šŸ‘€ Ever Catch Yourself Covering Your Eyes When You’re Exhausted?

What if that instinctive habit is actually your body’s built-in reset button?

When you gently cup your palms over your closed eyes—a practice often called ā€œpalmingā€ā€”you may be activating several natural pathways that help your nervous system shift into a calmer, more restorative state.

Here are three reasons it may feel so relaxing:

āœ… Pressure & Relaxation Response
Gentle pressure around the eyes can stimulate nerves connected to the brainstem, potentially encouraging a parasympathetic (ā€œrest and digestā€) response that slows the body down and promotes relaxation.

āœ… Darkness & Brain Recovery
Completely blocking light reduces visual input to the brain. This may help the visual cortex shift from a highly alert, information-processing mode into a more relaxed state associated with mental restoration.

āœ… Warmth & Circulation
The natural warmth of your hands may increase local circulation around the eyes and surrounding tissues, helping relieve some of the strain that accumulates after long periods of screen time.

šŸ’» If you spend hours on computers, tablets, or phones, try this simple protocol:

ā±ļø Cover your closed eyes with your palms for 60 seconds:
• Mid-morning
• After lunch
• Mid-afternoon

Many people report reduced eye strain, improved comfort, and a noticeable mental reset.

āš ļø If you have a history of retinal detachment, glaucoma, recent eye surgery, or other eye conditions, consult your eye doctor before applying pressure around the eyes.

Sometimes the most powerful health tools aren’t complicated—they’re built right into our design.

šŸ‘‡ Have you ever tried palming? Did you notice a difference in your focus, stress level, or eye fatigue?

🧠 What If Your Body Isn’t Broken… It’s Just Struggling to Communicate?

One of the biggest misconceptions about healthcare is that the goal is to ā€œfixā€ people.

As a chiropractor, I’m not here to change a diagnosis.
I’m not here to treat a symptom.
I’m not here to change a patient’s past.

What I am here to do is support how the brain and body communicate.

Every second of every day, your brain is processing information from every organ, muscle, gland, and tissue in your body. Stress—whether physical, chemical, or emotional—can create interference in that communication.

Think of it like static on a radio.

The message is still there, but it may not be coming through as clearly as it should.

That’s the foundation of Zone Technique.

Zone Technique recognizes six major systems of the body:

🧠 Nervous System
ā¤ļø Circulatory System
🫁 Respiratory System
šŸ½ļø Digestive System
šŸ›”ļø Glandular/Immune System
šŸ’Ŗ Muscular/Skeletal System

The goal isn’t to ā€œhealā€ you.

The body already possesses an incredible ability to heal and adapt.

The goal is to help restore neurological balance within these six systems so your brain and body can communicate more efficiently—even in the presence of life’s many stressors.

I’m not fixing anything.

I’m helping create an environment where your body can function, adapt, and respond at its highest potential.

Sometimes when interference is reduced and communication improves, meaningful changes begin. šŸŒ€šŸ¤

šŸ’¬ Have you ever noticed how your body performs differently when you’re less stressed, sleeping better, and feeling more balanced? Share your experience below.

šŸ“ž Ready to see if Zone Technique could help your nervous system function at its best? Schedule your consultation today at Stanly Wellness Center.
