Week 2 of our Summer Social Groups are in full swing! ☀️🌸

Every game, activity, and interaction is intentionally designed to support communication and social growth through:

✨ Sensory & adapted activities
✨ AAC modeling
✨ Language-rich interactions
✨ Peer engagement

While the kids are busy building, creating, laughing, and connecting, they’re also practicing important skills like turn-taking, flexible thinking, self-advocacy, problem-solving, and meaningful communication.

We love watching confidence grow and friendships bloom each week. 💛

Mealtimes are hard for a lot of families.

But there is a difference between a child who has strong preferences and a child whose body is working really hard just to be near certain foods.

One is about what they like. The other is about what their nervous system can tolerate right now.

Both are real. Both deserve support. And they do not look the same in therapy.

If meal time still heavier than they should, that is worth a closer look.

Apraxia and gestalt language processing get confused all the time. And I understand why.

A child who relies on scripted phrases, song lines, or memorized chunks of language might get labeled apraxia, because their spontaneous speech sounds limited or effortful.

A child with apraxia who has worked hard to build a small bank of reliable, practiced phrases might get labeled a gestalt language processor, because that is what their language sounds like from the outside.

Here is why this matters. These are not the same thing, and they do not respond to the same approach.

Apraxia is a motor speech difference. The brain knows exactly what it wants to say. The signal between the brain and the muscles that produce speech is not connecting consistently. The therapy is targeted, repetitive motor practice, building speech movements the same way you would build any motor skill.

Gestalt language processing is a language development pattern, not a disorder. Some children acquire language in whole chunks, scripts, and phrases before they ever break language down into single words. That is not a delay. That is a different and valid starting point, with its own stages and its own path toward flexible language.

If a child is treated for apraxia when they are actually a gestalt language processor, therapy can target the wrong thing entirely. And the reverse is true too.

This is exactly why we do not start with a label. We start with an evaluation that looks at how a child is actually using language and movement, because the plan only works if it is built for the right starting point.

If your child has been given a label that never quite felt right, or if therapy has not felt like it is going anywhere, let’s take a closer look together.

“I didn’t talk until I was five and I turned out fine.”

We hear this all the time.

And while that may be true for some children, every child deserves the opportunity to communicate, connect, and be understood now—not years from now.

Waiting because someone else eventually “caught up” can mean missing valuable opportunities to support a child’s growth, confidence, relationships, and learning.
Speech and language challenges are not always about talking. They can impact play, social interactions, emotional expression, literacy, and so much more.

If you’ve ever wondered whether your child’s communication skills are developing as expected, trust that instinct. An evaluation isn’t about finding something wrong—it’s about understanding your child and giving them the support they need to thrive.

🌸 Early support matters.
🌸 Answers matter.
🌸 Your concerns matter.

Funny Fridays at Communication Blooms 🌸🤍

Our SLPs spend their days helping kids build communication skills...

Unfortunately, coordinating schedules with their work bestie is still a work in progress. 😂

I have so much respect for pediatricians. They are keeping track of hundreds of children. They are working within timed appointments and standardized screens. They are doing their jobs well.

And there is still a gap.

Developmental milestones are designed to catch the edges. A child who is significantly delayed will show up. But milestones were never designed to catch the child who arrived just under the wire using a compensatory pattern that will quietly cost them later.

The child who hits 50 words by 24 months, but whose tongue is doing things during swallowing that will shift their teeth and narrow their palate over the next decade.

The child who talks, but whose speech is effortful in a way that is not yet flagged because the output is intelligible enough.

The child who eats, but only from a list of 12 foods and is slowly restricting further, not because of preference but because their nervous system is running a threat response every time something unfamiliar lands on their plate.

Passing the screen is not the same as thriving.

The families who find us early are not the families in crisis. They are the families paying close enough attention to notice that something could be easier for their child. And they acted on that.

That is not overreacting. That is parenting with a whole-child lens.

If you have been watching your child and wondering, trust that. DM us BLOOM and let’s talk about what we see.

Some children are Gestalt Language Processors (GLPs), meaning they learn language in chunks or phrases before breaking them down into individual words and creating their own flexible language.

At Communication Blooms, our therapists take the time to understand how your child learns language so we can provide support that is individualized, evidence-based, and respectful of their communication journey.
When we recognize and support GLP development, we can better help children build meaningful, self-generated communication while honoring the way their brains naturally process language.

Every child deserves support that meets them where they are.

Have questions about your child’s communication development? We’re here to help.

Every child develops communication in their own way, and sometimes it can be hard to know when extra support might help.

A speech and language evaluation is simply a starting point.

It’s a chance to understand your child’s strengths, identify areas where support may be beneficial, and create a clear plan moving forward.

You don’t need a diagnosis or a “big enough concern” to ask questions.

If something has been on your mind, we’re here to help you take the next step and schedule an evaluation.✨

This review meant so much to read!!

Because behind every IEP, every note, every meeting… is a family just trying to do right by their child.
And that can feel overwhelming fast.

At Communication Blooms, we see how often parents walk into these meetings feeling unsure, unheard, or like they’re supposed to “just know” what to say. The truth is — most families aren’t given the tools or language to fully understand what’s being discussed or how to advocate in the moment.

That’s why we take our role beyond therapy.
We slow things down. We read the notes. We help prepare questions. We help translate the “school language” into something that actually makes sense for families. And we remind parents that it’s okay to ask for clarity, to ask again, and to take up space in these conversations.

Because IEP meetings shouldn’t feel like something you survive alone — they should feel like something you’re supported through.

And every child deserves a team that shows up that way.

Myofunctional therapy is about so much more than tongue exercises.

The way we breathe, rest our tongue, chew, swallow, and use the muscles of the mouth and face can impact everyday functions—including sleep, feeding, speech, oral development, and more.

At Communication Blooms, we work with both children and adults to address underlying oral function concerns, including tongue ties, lip ties, mouth breathing, tongue posture, swallowing patterns, and related challenges.

Because often, the symptoms we see are connected—and understanding the “why” behind them is where meaningful progress begins.

✨ Better breathing.
✨ Better function.
✨ Better quality of life.

Have questions about myofunctional therapy or wondering if it might be a good fit for you or your child?
