Divine Tension explores the
intersection of faith, mental
health, trauma, and personal
growth. Together, we’ll explore
how our experiences shape our
sense of belonging, believing,
and becoming, and how
trauma can complicate the way
we experience ourselves. This
class creates space to question,
room for doubt, and an
environment for growth
without requiring us to
abandon our faith or ourselves.

There is a particular kind of pain that doesn't get named a lot in parenting. It's the ache of watching everyone else get the thing you are quietly wanting for your family, maybe even desparate for..... A pregnancy announcement. Playing time for your kid. A report card that doesn't break your kid's heart, because you know they are smart. School is just so hard. The school dance invite. The job offer, even a small one. The one day without the chronic pain. A young adult who has launched, while yours is still finding their footing. Maybe they are carring a diagnosis (like ADHD, Depression or Autism).

Mental health diagnoses, chronic illness, developmental timelines that don't match the brochure. These often come with relief (finally an answer) tangled up with grief (the path you imagined is gone).

Grief researcher Kenneth Doka has a term for this: disenfranchised grief - grief that goes unacknowledged because it doesn't fit our usual scripts for loss. There's no funeral, no ritual, no casserole on the porch. Just a private ache that people are expected to swallow, minimize, or hide.

You want to be happy for other families. You are happy for them.
And then you go home and fall apart a little. Or a lot.

This isn't bitterness. This isn't failure. This is what it feels like to love your people deeply. To grieve the gap between what you hoped for and where you actually are. It is a real, researched form of grief. It has a name.

The sidelines are a real place. And sitting there takes its own kind of courage. You are not alone there.
