Today is National Color Blind Awareness Day — and this image is one of the most powerful tools we use right in our exam room.

This is an Ishihara color plate — the gold standard test for color vision deficiency.

Here's what most people don't know:

👁️ Color blindness affects 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women — that's approximately 11 million Americans
🧬 80% of cases are red-green color blindness — the most common and most commonly undetected type
❓ Many people with color blindness don't know they have it — they've simply adapted to seeing the world differently their entire life
📚 Children with undetected color blindness often struggle with color-coded learning materials in school — and no one connects the dots
🪖 Fun fact: During World War II, color-blind soldiers were specifically recruited to spot camouflaged objects — their eyes detected patterns that normal color vision actually missed

Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

On Monday, April 8, at 11:07 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, the Earth’s familiar sun will briefly disappear for people in North America as a total solar eclipse enters the continent through Mexico’s Pacific coast.

From there, the “path of totality,” the band where the Sun is completely blocked from view, will cut diagonally across the continent, delighting U.S. viewers from Texas to Maine. All told, the totality will pass over 13 U.S. states, and at least a partial eclipse will be visible from all 50, within eyeshot of 99% of the U.S. population.

That includes us, here in Southern California, where we’ll see a nearly 50% eclipse.
