Since our last update 3 months ago, James completed another swallow study and achieved remarkable improvement β progressing from moderate-severe oropharyngeal dysphagia to mild oropharyngeal dysphagia. He has now advanced to a minced & moist diet with thin liquids, a huge milestone in his swallowing journey. Prior to beginning therapy, he did not eat by mouth for 3 years.
Initial Progress Post!!
Occasionally, we meet that special person who is self-motivated to do the hard work required for an improved quality of life. This is James.
James is 82 years old, and his daughter drives him an hour each way to attend therapy weekly. After becoming critically ill, he spent three months in the hospital, going on and off the ventilator. He required a G-tube for his primary nutrition and hydration and failed two swallow studies prior to beginning therapy.
James not only attended therapy consistently, but he also completed his therapist-led home exercise program daily on his own. Through dedication, determination, and hard work, he continued making progress.
James continues to work hard in therapy with goals of further improving his swallow function and quality of life. He is one of the many patients who makes a therapistβs job rewarding and fulfilling. His perseverance reminds us why we do what we do.
We hope sharing Jamesβ story encourages someone else to take that first step toward a better quality of life.
