The day the car keys become a conversation.
For most older adults the car isn't transportation. It's the last piece of not needing anyone.
Which is why this goes badly so often. The family leads with safety, the parent hears "you're finished," and it turns into a standoff about something nobody actually wanted to fight over.
A few things that help:
🚗 Separate the two questions. "Is driving still safe?" belongs with their physician and the DMV — not with you, and not with us. We're a non-medical agency and that assessment isn't ours to make. The question you can own is the other one: "If you weren't driving, how would you still get everywhere you go?"
📋 Answer that second question first. Nobody hands over the keys into a void. Map it out on paper — the Tuesday appointment, the pharmacy, church, the market, the friend across town, the haircut. All of it.
🌙 Notice the quiet version. A lot of people stop driving at night, or on the freeway, or anywhere unfamiliar, months before they say a word about it. That's usually the real beginning of this — and a much better conversation than the one after an accident.
🤝 Make it a trade, not a loss. Giving up the keys is only a loss if nothing replaces them.
This is a large part of what our caregivers actually do: driving to appointments and waiting through them, the pharmacy stop on the way home, the market, the standing Thursday visit across town. Every caregiver carries a DMV record check and is bonded and insured.
Independence was never the car. It's still getting to go where you want to go.
