We’ve been conditioned to believe that learning only counts if it looks like school.

✅ Filling out a worksheet = Proof of learning!

❌ Building a LEGO city with an understanding of balance, structure, and design = Just playing.

✅ Passing a test with memorized dates = Educated!

❌ Explaining history in depth after months of passionate research = Not “measurable”.

The deepest, most meaningful learning doesn’t happen in worksheets or tests, it happens in real life.

And we can really harness this magic as homeschoolers when we understand who our child is as a unique learner. What type of learner are they? What environment do they need to
thrive? What is the best way for them to learn something new? How do they show you their understanding?

At Creative Space Learning Center, we encourage curiosity and support children's interests as they grow. 🌱

People talk a lot about following children's interests in unschooling, but there's something that comes before that.

They need a world worth being interested in. Books, art, nature, music, real tools, conversations, new places, people doing interesting things...

Our job isn't just to stand back and wait for interests to magically appear, it's to keep widening their world. To bring interesting things into their life and see what sticks around.

Then, when something catches their interest, we can help them find the resources, opportunities, and connections that help them pursue that interest. To go from interest to project, curiosity to creation.

You know what the world needs right now? It needs creators, innovators, and people who have honed divergent thinking skills. There are problems to be solved -- big problems. More than rule followers, we need to raise problem solvers!

Do you know what situations help kids learn those traits?

Massive, vast amounts of uninterrupted time to follow their own interests.

Unfortunately, most kids aren't getting that. When parents, teachers, or school bells say, "it's time to stop reading and switch to math now" we do two damaging things:

1) We artificially compartmentalize topics, which cuts off connections, possibilities, imagination, and solutions, and

2) We tell those kids that what they are interested in doesn't matter as much as what we want them to do, that we know better, and they should stop listening to themselves. We cut off their curiosity, their dive into material, and tell them that someone else is the expert or authority, even of their own life.

At Creative Space Learning Center, our children get time to play, time to explore their interests, time to problem solve, and time to figure out who they are.
