Adaptable and resilient kids can handle the things life throws at them well. Here are some things to say to your kids that may help to build that resilience.

Who doesn’t appreciate a nice compliment, right?

The most effective compliments help build a growth mindset by focusing on effort and perseverance, reminding children that their skills can grow over time. 🥰

Little ears are always listening! Screen what your kids hear and see to prevent unwanted exposure to adult topics.

Children are always listening and watching, even when it doesn’t seem like it. The conversations we have and the content we consume can shape how safe and supported they feel.

Here are a few ways parents and caregivers can help children process what they hear or see:

🗣️ Be mindful of what’s playing and what’s being said:
Limiting exposure to social media and news around children can help reduce stress and confusion. Adult conversations about difficult topics can also be overwhelming when little ears are nearby.

😊 Naming emotions:
If your child heard or saw something upsetting, pause and check in. Start by asking how they feel, this will helps children make sense of big experiences.

🫂 Validate their feelings:
Let them know their feelings make sense. You don’t need to fix everything. Feeling heard is powerful.

🗨️ Explain what’s happening in age-appropriate terms:
Keep it simple. Share only what they need to know right now.

💏 Reassure them about safety: Children need to know they are safe and cared for. Consistent reassurance builds trust and emotional security.
Supporting children’s emotional well-being helps build resilient families and a healthier Long Beach community.
