🌫️ Fog Nets: Harvesting Water from Thin Air in Chile 🇨🇱

In Chile’s foggy, arid regions like the Atacama Desert, an innovative and sustainable solution is helping communities tackle water scarcity — fog nets.

These fine mesh panels capture moisture from the fog as it drifts through the hills. The tiny droplets collect on the mesh, drip down, and are funneled into storage tanks. Just one net can yield up to 15 liters of clean water per day, perfect for drinking, farming, or livestock.

Japan achieved a milestone in renewable energy by deploying its first megawatt-scale tidal turbine, the AR1100, in the Naru Strait near the Goto Islands.

Developed by Proteus Marine Renewables, this 1.1 MW grid-connected turbine harnesses the kinetic energy of tidal currents to generate clean electricity, supporting Japan’s decarbonization goals and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The AR1100 features a three-bladed horizontal-axis rotor with advanced composite blades, optimized for efficiency through real-time pitch and yaw control systems.

Mounted on a gravity-based structure and connected via a subsea cable, it delivers power to the grid with minimal environmental impact, as it operates underwater, preserving coastal aesthetics.

Building on a 2021 pilot project with a 500kW turbine that achieved 97% availability, the AR1100 was upgraded with enhanced systems for greater efficiency. This deployment marks Japan’s strategic shift toward marine energy, leveraging its vast coastal waters and strong currents like the Kuroshio.

Despite challenges like underwater maintenance and grid integration, the project showcases Japan’s innovation in overcoming limited land-based renewable options post-Fukushima.

It positions Japan as a leader in tidal energy, potentially inspiring global adoption in coastal nations.
