Insomnia is the most common sleep complaint in the world. It is also one of the most misunderstood.

Most people think insomnia just means you cannot fall asleep. But insomnia is more than that. It is waking at 3am and lying there for hours with your mind racing. It is falling asleep fine but waking up exhausted anyway. It is a brain that will not quiet down even when your body is desperately tired.

And in most cases, the standard response, a sleep medication, does not address a single one of the underlying reasons it is happening.

Swipe through for a real picture of what insomnia is, what drives it, and what actual treatment looks like.

One month in. Ten turns. And Dr. Lisa Coburn is already noticing something she has never experienced in her life: the ability to breathe through her nose.

Dr. Lisa is one of Rebis Health’s own providers, and a patient herself. In this update she shares three things she is already noticing since starting MARPE treatment. Her tongue finally has somewhere comfortable to rest. A lifelong swallowing problem she dealt with every single day has resolved. And for the first time, nasal breathing is starting to feel possible.

This is what real treatment looks like. Not managing a symptom. Changing the physical structure that was causing it.

Follow for more on MARPE, airway expansion, and what integrated sleep and airway care can do for teens and adults.

Your body has a lot going on while you sleep. It is repairing tissue, strengthening memories, clearing waste from the brain, and balancing hormones. A lot of important work happens in those hours.

When you eat a large meal within two to three hours of bedtime, you interrupt that process before it even starts. Digesting food keeps your body temperature higher than it needs to be, and your body needs to cool down before deep sleep can begin. Eating late also causes your blood sugar to rise, which suppresses melatonin (the hormone that signals it is time to sleep) and puts your body into an alert, active state right when it should be winding down.

Research consistently shows that leaving at least a two to three hour gap between your last meal and bedtime helps you fall asleep faster and spend more time in deep, restorative sleep.

If genuine hunger is keeping you awake, a small low-glycemic snack is completely fine. Low-glycemic foods are foods that raise your blood sugar slowly and gently rather than causing a spike. Good options include a small handful of almonds or walnuts, a few slices of turkey or chicken, a boiled egg, a small portion of plain Greek yogurt, or a few slices of apple with almond butter.

A full meal close to bedtime, though, is working against your sleep before you even close your eyes.

Follow for weekly, science-backed sleep tips and practical education on what is really driving poor sleep quality.

You are not scatterbrained. You are not just getting older. You are not bad at mornings.

When your airway partially obstructs during sleep, even briefly and repeatedly throughout the night, your brain is pulled out of deep restorative sleep cycles to restore airflow. You may never fully wake up. But you also never fully rest.

The result: you wake up cloudy. You lose words mid-sentence. You cannot concentrate past noon. You reach for more coffee and it barely helps.

At Rebis Health, we treat the airway issue driving the fog. Not just the fog itself.

Your baby is struggling to latch. Or they sleep with their mouth open. Or feeding has been harder than anyone told you it would be.

Most parents are told to wait it out. To try different positions. To give it more time.

But what no one is telling you is that tongue tie can be the reason behind all of it. And the connection between tongue tie in infancy and lifelong airway health is something most families never hear about until it has become a much bigger problem.

At Rebis Health, we treat tongue tie as an airway issue first. Because that is exactly what it is.

A CPAP requires you to replace supplies every three months for the rest of your life.

A mandibular advancement device works half the time and only improves your breathing halfway.

I tried both.

MARPE fixes the anatomy that is causing the sleep apnea in the first place.

If we can fix the anatomy, we can completely cure it.

That is not a sales pitch. That is what I personally chose for myself after 20 years in sleep medicine.

You get to decide what you want. A lifetime of managing the problem. Or a permanent fix.

The shape of your jaw was not decided at birth. It was shaped, day by day, by where your tongue rested.

This is one of the most important things we teach at Rebis Health, and almost nobody talks about it.

When your tongue does not rest consistently at the roof of your mouth, over time it can contribute to narrow jaws, crowded teeth, collapsed airways, and poor sleep quality.

The good news is this is addressable. At any age.

Comment AIRWAY below and we will send you more information on how we assess and treat airway concerns for both children and adults.
