Today is World Mental Health Day, and this year's theme is "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change." 💛

We love that, because it's what happens in our office every day. Real healing starts when someone finally feels heard. Not fixed. Not lectured. Heard.

A parent recently shared this about their family's experience with us:

"I can't express how grateful I am for the incredible support my daughters have received at Renew Counseling." · B.L.

Every story that walks through our door is different. Some are heavy. Some are just confusing. All of them matter.

If your family has a story that needs a safe place to land, we're here. You're not alone and it's okay to not feel okay.

It's Mental Illness Awareness Week, so we're clearing up a few things we hear from East Texas parents all the time. 💙

"We're not there yet." "It's probably just a phase." "They'd never agree to go anyway."

We understand every one of those. And we want you to know therapy isn't a last resort. It isn't only for a crisis and it isn't a sign you've failed as a parent. Most families who walk through our door simply noticed something felt off and decided not to wait.

Half of all lifetime mental health conditions begin by age 14. That's not meant to scare you. It's a reminder that the teen years are exactly when support can make the biggest difference.

And if your teen isn't ready to talk? Our parent coaching works directly with you, so you can rebuild connection at home while the door stays open.

You're standing in the hallway feeling terrible. It got loud, a door closed, and now you're doing the math on how much damage you just did.

Here's the part almost nobody tells parents: this is the most useful teaching moment in your whole day. Not in spite of what just happened. Because of it.

When we ask teenagers about the fights, they rarely lead with the yelling. They lead with what happened after. "He just went to bed." Or: "She came in later and said sorry." The blow-up is the event. The next hour is the memory.

Nobody teaches a teenager how to be wrong out loud. They can't get it from a lecture, because the whole skill is what you do when your pride is on the line. They learn it by watching an adult they trust do it badly and then fix it.

Losing your temper isn't the failure. Losing your temper and then acting like it didn't happen is, because that version teaches them that the way to handle being wrong is to wait for everyone to forget.

Twelve words: "I was too loud earlier. That's on me. Can we try again?"

Then stop. Don't explain what they did that led to it. The moment you add "but you were," you've taken it back.

Rough night? You're not the only one. Send this to a parent who needs it.

Every parent of a teenager has a version of this: something at home changed a few weeks ago, and you keep telling yourself it's a phase. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't, and the hard part is telling the difference from the kitchen.

We wrote down the ten signs we hear most often from parents in the weeks before they call us. Sleep, friends, grades, the anger that's bigger than the moment, the thing they said once that scared you. Each one comes with what's part of the age and what's worth a call, and the last page is one sentence you can say tonight.

It's a free PDF. Comment GUIDE below and we'll send it to your Messenger. If you'd rather keep it between us, just send us a message with the word GUIDE.

Parents describe the same three days almost word for word. The first night is anger. The second is silence. And by the third the kid is noticeably lower than the offense ever warranted.

That's not manipulation. For most teenagers the phone isn't entertainment — it's the building their friendships live in. The group chat is the hallway. The unanswered message at 9pm is a door closing.

Which leaves parents in a trap: the withdrawn, isolated kid you were worried about is often what the punishment produces.

In this one: the question to ask yourself before you take it, three phone rules that actually hold in a real house, when the phone genuinely does need to come out of their hands, and how to take it without it becoming a disappearance.

What's the phone rule at your house? We'd genuinely like to know — we're putting together a post on what East Texas families are actually doing.
