Fundal massage, also known as uterine massage, is often performed as a routine procedure after birth, but research shows it does little to prevent postpartum hemorrhage and can be painful for many. On today's replay episode of the EBB Podcast, nurse, community educator, and advocate Barbie Christianson joins Dr. Rebecca Dekker to talk about the myths surrounding this common postpartum procedure and how it connects to broader patterns of obstetric violence in maternity care.

Barbie explains the difference between a fundal assessment, a routine massage, and the massage used to treat active postpartum hemorrhage, and walks through what the evidence actually shows about each approach. She also shares trauma-informed scripts that nurses and providers can use to explain what they are doing and obtain informed consent, even in urgent, fast moving situations. Learn how unit culture, staffing, and fear based practice patterns can affect whether an unnecessary intervention becomes the default standard of care, and how to speak up and advocate for respectful care.

Always so glad to assist you! And have the favor returned!

What a crazy month! Running full speed💨 to play catch up after a family vacation and mission trip at the end of June and jumping straight into VBS.

3 births serving repeat clients that feel like family... a few birth dress rehearsals.... watching God work all things out.. and assisting at a birth where I didn't realize the clients were related to several of my clients. God knew, even when I didn't, and what a lovely surprise!

Life was very full this month. 😍😍

Welcome to 2 sweet girls and 2 sweet boys!!

Now waiting on my first granddaughter!!

Great series of posts for those with questions about vitamin K!

Great series of posts for those with questions about vitamin K!

The Vitamin K Conversation We Need to Have

🌿 I need to ask you something.

In all my years as a midwife, there are a handful of conversations that come up again and again — conversations that families clearly want to have but feel like they're not supposed to ask about depending on the provider.

Vitamin K is one of them.

Every week I sit with families who have done their own research, who have real questions, who feel caught between "just trust the routine" and a gut sense that there's more to the story.

They're right. There is more to the story.

Over the next week, I'm going to share a series of posts on newborn vitamin K — grounded entirely in published, peer-reviewed research.

We're going to talk about:

🔹 Why ALL babies are born with low vitamin K — and whether that's actually a deficiency or just how humans are designed

🔹 The connection between cord clamping and newborn bleeding risk that almost nobody is talking about

🔹 What your baby's blood is doing in the first moments of life that most providers don't even know about

🔹 How your own health history — your medications, your clotting disorders, your genetics — changes the picture for your baby

🔹 The honest truth about oral vs. intramuscular vitamin K, what the evidence actually says, and what nobody tells you about the schedule

🔹 And showing how I am changing my oral vitamin K protocol based on evidence. Yes! You still have the option for IM, Oral or to decline.

This is not an anti-vitamin K series. It is a pro-informed-consent series. There is a difference.

But before I start — I want to hear from you.

What questions do YOU have about vitamin K?

What were you told? What felt incomplete? What did you wish someone had explained before your baby arrived?

Maybe you declined the injection and want to know if you made the right call.
Maybe you said yes without really understanding what you were agreeing to.
Maybe you've heard things that scared you and you don't know what's true.
Maybe you're pregnant right now and trying to figure this out before your birth.

Drop your questions, your experiences, and your thoughts in the comments below.

I read every single one. Your questions will shape this series — because this isn't about what I think you should know. It's about what you actually want to understand.

📌 Follow this page so you don't miss a post. The series starts this week.

Many women say home sweet home is best when it comes to giving birth. Compared to being hooked up to wires in a hospital room filled with beeping machines, some women are choosing their own living or bedrooms as the best environment to give birth.

I am loving your information posts!

One of the biggest mindset shifts in labor is understanding that contractions aren't happening to you, they're happening for you.

Every contraction has a job:

Thin the cervix (effacement)
Open the cervix (dilation)
Help baby move down and rotate through the pelvis
Encourage the release of labor hormones
Prepare baby for life outside the womb

Research shows that the uterus is one of the strongest muscles in the human body.

During labor, it contracts rhythmically to coordinate the incredible process of birth.
That doesn't mean contractions aren't intense. They absolutely can be. But understanding their purpose can sometimes help reframe the experience from something to fear into something your body is actively doing.
The next time you hear someone describe contractions as "just pain," remember:
Pain has no purpose.
Contractions do.

Such an amazing resource in our area

Such an amazing resource in our area

Your body remembers more than you realize.
Stress and trauma aren’t limited to major life events. The body can also be influenced by:

• Prenatal or postpartum experiences.
• Witnessing or supporting others through difficult situations
• Ongoing uncertainty, like global events, health fears, or prolonged stress
• Chronic pressure without enough time to recover
• Times when you had to stay strong, quiet, or on guard

When stress accumulates, the body may stay in survival mode — even when you’re safe.

✨ Release & Restore is a gentle, supportive class designed to help regulate the nervous system, build a sense of safety, and allow the body to gradually unwind and release held tension.
