Today we’re celebrating our Guatemala Director, Alex! We are so grateful for everything she does for Refuge and for the heart she has for the people we serve.

There are so many details that go into keeping Refuge moving in Guatemala, and Alex is an important part of making it all happen. We appreciate her dedication, hard work, and commitment to our mission.

🎉 Happy Birthday to the incredible Dr. Antay Waters! 🎂❤️

We are so fortunate to have Antay as part of the Refuge International family and serving on our Board of Directors.

Antay is truly a jack of all trades. From caring for patients in the clinic, to jumping into the OR, to stepping in wherever she is needed—you can always count on her. But one of the things we love most about Antay is how much she genuinely loves our students. She never misses an opportunity to teach, encourage, explain, or share her knowledge with those around her.

She doesn’t just provide incredible care—she invests in people. Her love for her patients, our students, and the entire Refuge family is evident in everything she does.

Antay, we are incredibly grateful for the time, knowledge, heart, and energy you give to Refuge and the people we serve.

We want you to meet Dr. Chris Yancey, one of those people who is really hard to put into words. ❤️

For 10 years, Chris has been coming to Guatemala with Refuge, giving his time and his incredible skill as an OB/GYN surgeon to care for women who need us. He also serves on our Board, but what Chris means to Refuge goes so far beyond any title.

When I say Chris loves his patients, I mean he really loves his patients. He worries about them long after surgery is over and long after he has gone home. He remembers them, asks about them, and wants to know how they’re doing. They aren’t just patients to him—they are people he carries with him.

And that love extends to our Refuge family, too. Chris loves our interpreters like they are his own family. After 10 years of serving together, these aren’t just people he works alongside in Guatemala. They truly are family.

Back home in Longview, Texas, he gives that same kind of love to his patients. And somehow, even on his days off, you can find him volunteering at a free clinic and taking care of people who need him.

That’s just Chris.

If you’re lucky enough to have him in your circle, you know—you are loved unconditionally. He will worry about you, check on you, laugh with you, probably give you a hard time, and love you through all of it.

We are so lucky that for the last 10 years, Refuge and the people of Guatemala have gotten to call him one of ours. ❤️🇬🇹.

What an incredible week in San Raymundo! ❤️🇬🇹

Together, we accomplished something truly remarkable. In just 4½ days, our volunteer teams completed a record-breaking 90 surgeries across our general, orthopedic, and gynecologic surgical services.

Our medical clinic cared for 336 patients, while our teams also performed a record number of laboratory tests, X-rays, ultrasounds, and surgical consultations—bringing hope and healing to hundreds of individuals and families.

None of this would be possible without the dedication of our amazing volunteers, the support of our university partners, and the generosity of our donors and supporters. Every surgery, every clinic visit, and every life touched is possible because of you.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for making this mission possible. Together, we’re changing lives—one patient at a time. 💙

Roxie reported it was a RUFF day at the office when her baby needed surgery, thankfully Antay Waters was on hand and able to swiftly suture her up. We value our providers, they are the best!
