Giving a child a way to communicate does not take their words away.

The worry sounds like this. If we give him signs or a device, he will stop trying to talk. It is a reasonable worry, and it is the wrong way round.

Communication is not a fixed amount that gets used up. A child who can finally be understood tends to communicate more, not less.

Signs, pictures and devices are bridges. Nobody sitting across from your child is describing an endpoint.

If your child has something to say and no way to say it, that is the thing to bring in.

Before anything else, get the hearing checked.

A child who is not hearing clearly is not going to speak clearly. That part is simple, and it is the step families skip most often.

Repeated ear infections can leave fluid behind, and fluid muffles sound. It can be quiet enough that nobody notices, and still be enough to matter.

A hearing screening is quick and it does not hurt. Ask your pediatrician for one.

Do that first, then look at speech. Then bring what you find with you.

More practice is not the answer to every speech difficulty.

Some children know the word perfectly well. They can hear it, they can picture it, and they want to say it. The part that is hard for them is getting the mouth to carry out the plan.

From the outside that can look inconsistent. The same word comes out right on Tuesday and not on Thursday, and that gets read as a child who is not trying.

Telling a child like that to try harder asks them to fix the wrong thing. They are usually already trying harder than anybody else in the room.

Which difficulty it is changes what actually helps, and that is not something a parent can sort out from the kitchen table on their own.

Before the first word, there is pointing.

Communication starts well before words do. Long before a first word arrives, children are already telling you things, and those signals count for a great deal.

Pointing at something in order to share it with you, rather than just to get it. Looking back at your face to check what you think. Reaching, waving, handing you a toy, lifting their arms to be picked up. Babbling that stops and starts as though it is waiting for your reply, because that is exactly what it is doing.

If all of those are there, a great deal is already happening. If some of them are missing, that is worth a look, and it is worth it sooner rather than later.

Sessions are short and regular, usually 30 to 45 minutes on a set day, so it becomes part of the week rather than an event you brace for.

The play is the method. Games, books and toys are how the target sounds and words get practised without it feeling to your child like practice.

You are either in the room or you get the plan, because the therapist wants the same thing happening at home during the week. And the goals get written down and revisited, so you can see what has changed and what has not.

Nobody expects you to run this alone. Between sessions is not homework you can fail.

Checking is not disloyal. You can love the people who told you to wait and still go and find out for yourself.

Everyone told you to wait. You still noticed. That counts for something.

It is not the screen. It is the turns.

A turn is one back and forth. You say something, your child responds, with a word, a sound or just a look. That is one turn.

Turns are what build language. Not the number of words your child hears in a day, but the number of times they get to answer.

A screen can take the turns away, not because screens are bad, but because a screen talks and nothing in it is waiting for your child to reply. The same screen can give the turns back. Watch it together, pause it, ask what happened, then wait.

You are not being graded on this. Nobody runs a house on perfect turns. A few more of them, most days, is the whole idea.

Language is what it 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴.

The words your child understands, the words they use, and how they put them together.

A child can have one without the other. Some children have a great deal to say and are hard to understand. Some are perfectly easy to understand and have very little to say.

𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽.
