Brittany Lea Nurse • Educator • Wife • Mom of 4 • Author Hey I am Brittany. My most sincere prayer is the lyrics of the Carl Cartee song: “More than Just Words”.

I have worked for 10 years as an RN, and for the past 3 years as a nursing instructor, but my true passion has always been writing. I’ve been reluctant to share my writing in the past, but I have learned through experiences with death and the hard stuff in life, that writing is very therapeutic both for the writer and for the reader. I’m just a woman in my thirties trying to navigate motherhood and work out my relationship with Christ one day at time. It’s my prayer as he sang, that my life will honor God with ‘more than just words that I speak from my mouth, that I’d give him my thoughts before they're even out, every ambition, every dream I dream. More than just talk from my lips, cuz you’re all that there is With all of my heart father, I want to give MORE THAN JUST WORDS!’

These lyrics are where the tagline of this blog was born. Someday, I’d love to be a best-selling author, but for now-- I just want to be a vessel of encouragement to others. Thanks for being here!

Today makes 2 weeks since my baby brother has been with Jesus. My heart is heavy, but Dylan’s still teaching me things. I actually think he’s taught me more in his absence than he did when he was here!

Dylan and I have always been super close and shared our hearts deeply with one another. We had lots of grand midnight plans and business ideas over the years. One that I’ve been thinking a lot about is the blog we started together about 10 years ago. I don’t remember how many posts we made or if it was even received well, but thanks to email threads, I have some pretty special reminders of that time. It was Dylan’s deepest desire that his life would be pleasing to God and that his testimony would impact someone’s eternity…so we named the blog, Our Heart Cry.

On March 2015, he wrote to me:

“For years I've wanted to share my story, my writings and my passions, but have always been to afraid of what others thought. I thought to myself, "What does it matter? It isn't gong to help anyone." This may be true and I may not be able to help anyone with the words I write, or the stories I share, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't share them.”

Oh, if he only knew how MANY people his story and his life have touched!!

One of the last podcasts he sent to me was from 10000 MINUTES. This Podcast talks about the “adventures and struggles of living out our daily lives WITH Jesus, not for Him.”

How fitting! Dylan’s life impacted so many people because that’s exactly what he did. He wasn’t perfect, but there is no doubt He WALKED WITH JESUS. He met with Jesus often. He praised Him both privately and publicly. He used his creativity to honor him. He learned to be a friend like Jesus. He trusted and walked with Jesus when he was scared, tired, and unsure of where they were headed.

In his final weeks, he organized a sibling Bible study and made us promise to be intentional and keep with it after he was gone. I am still so heartbroken, but Imma keep walking with Jesus through this season, because that’s what my Dyl taught me to do.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

People keep asking how we are. And honestly, we are sad and fearful and tired of watching someone we love have such a rough go. I do however, in the midst of it all, keep going back to the thought that Jesus sees us, just as He saw Nathaniel under the fig tree. Nathanial believed in Jesus after their encounter, because there was no doubt in his mind after speaking with Jesus that He saw his heart and his deepest needs.

I have always believed that God has a hand and is working all things for good, but he’s brought a new light to this verse in recent years. These “things” aren’t the “things” we see with our eyes, rather what is happening in spiritual realm and the hearts of believers. Cancer isn’t good, inequality isn’t good, addiction and heartache and loneliness are no good-and they never will be-but the Holy Spirit is still our comforter and through it all, he’s working it for good in our spirit and the spirit of others.

I don’t think that my brother got cancer at this time because it’s “when I needed it to happen”, but I do know, without a doubt, that the Holy Spirit is allowing me to see His presence in the midst. Sending little whispers of “I saw you under the fig tree” just like he did for Nathanial so many years ago.

He has lined things up so that my precious in laws could be nearby to help with the kids any time of day. Because it is summer time, I have no work, and he has allowed me to be at every appointment and hospitalization thus far. He has given me a minute alone or a phone call from my daddy with prayer just when I felt like I was done being positive and present. And I continue to feel His peace in every decision we have made and in every doctor He has sent our way.

And I truly lament for those who can’t see him in times like this and don’t have the village we have. That’s the part that feels unfair honestly. I pray they feel his presence and see his hand in other ways. I pray that everyone around me can feel seen and loved even in the midst of crappy circumstances the same way I have. I don’t know how it all will end, but I pray that no matter what, I’ll look back and I’ll say-God saw us, He held us, and He loved us well ♥️

“When Nathanael came toward him, Jesus Christ said of him, ‘Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.’
‘How do you know me?’ Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, ‘I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.’”— John 1:47–48 (NIV)

Life’s a beach. It is absolutely beautiful and full of wonder, with breathtaking moments and picture perfect views. But it can also pull you under and turn you upside down in the blink of an eye. At times, not knowing what the future holds makes it hard to see past the waves. Lately, we’ve been caught in the undertow and the feeling of helplessness that it’s brought all of us is soul crushing. I can see people checking my blog page, but for the first time in a very long time, I have very few words. Knowing that one of the best people I know has to endure such a terrible disease, breaks me. Not being able to do anything to help or ease the pain Danielle and Declan and our family are experiencing is the worst. But, we will praise Him in the storm and we’ll keep looking for the beauty, hoping that tomorrow will bring a little more sunshine and calm waters. 🙌😭🌊

Children are gifts from God, and in my life, most often, they are illustrators of the truths of God. The truth today, spoken through my two year old baby boy-Words mean very little; actions are what leave a real impact.

This morning, I woke up and my back was hurting really bad. I was telling my husband, and my little man said, “wait mommy” and left the room to go on a mission. He came back with what you see in the picture. A small, flat packaged ornament. At first I was wondering what he was doing, and then suddenly it hit me as he raised my shirt to place it on my back. He carefully pretended to peel it back and smoothed it over my back. I then knew exactly what he was doing. He was mimicking his maw maws daily actions. My father in law wears lidocaine patches on his back and my baby boy must have seen his maw maw putting them on for him. I don’t know if he saw it once, or numerous times, but I know that the action left an impact. He remembered her action, he remembered why she did it, and he acted in the same way.

Our God has always been a God of action. He sent Jesus to demonstrate the actions of his Character. Jesus demonstrated his love for humanity in his action on the cross. And, God’s still here today actively working via the Holy Spirit.

Oh God, help me to be more mindful of my actions at home and out in this world. I pray that the actions of me and husband would imitate the actions of Christ, leaving an impression for our children to remember for years to come 💕

It is truly beautiful to see how God connects people when you are obedient in the work you are called to do. As Christ followers, we are called to love God and love people. We are called to use our pain and experiences to meet people in similar experienxes in their times of need. This past weekend we raised money for the Leah Wilkinson Memorial Foundarion by hosting a pastalya dinner. So many helpful hearts and hands were involved. Obstacles arose, but God provided.

Before we even left the church, we were able to bless someone in our cancer community and meet needs only God knows about.

He opens doors, yall. He answers prayers, and He provides when we are open to being used by Him. My sweet momma’s work carries on - and it’s more apparent every year that it’s not just about cancer awareness-It’s about kingdom work: loving others well, showing up wirh compassion, meeting needs, and giving with open hands.

Thanks to all who gave this weekend and year after year so that mom’s legacy can live on. Thanks be to God for the ministry born our pain. The fruitfulness of this work becomes more and more evident with each passing year..

“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

It’s not just VBS. It’s a summer safe space. It’s a song that will stay on their heart for years to come. It’s a second in time that they have no worries. It’s a salty snack for their hungry belly. It’s a special bond with their Bible teacher. It’s a seed planted. It’s setting apart tomorrows leaders. It’s a seat filled in support of their child at parent night that would otherwise be empty. It’s not just VBS-it’s sacred work and I think it matters more than we know. I pray we always do it with our whole heart🤍

Yesterday, we had a follow up appointment for my baby boy. 6 weeks post op and he’s doing incredible. He just has to pass one more swallow study and he will be released. The wild thing is, we didn’t know just how sick he was and how bad he felt-until after he was fixed. Before surgery, he was irritable, very low on iron, and easily fatigued. We noticed, but we thought that was his norm because it was all very subtle. Now that his stomach is no longer in his chest, he’s so different. You can tell how good he now feels! I’ve had so many people comment to me on how good his color looks and how different he acts now. My first thought is, Praise God! Thank you for helping us find this problem hidden deep within him. My second thought-what a parallel to our lives pre-Christ! We are living, we are doing fine as far as everyone else can see, but something is off-subtle and not quite right. And just like the surgeon that restored my son’s stomach to the right position…our great physician is waiting, begging to transform us into who we were always suppose to be…HIS. We can start anew- life abundant-so much better than the life we once had. Lighter. Happier. Free and HEALED. And when it’s all said and done-that’s when we truly recognize just how empty and unhealthy our life was before we surrendered to his love 🧡

The day the sun stood still
Evil prevailed and sadness filled the air
An unfair trial and dreadful death
A mothers eyes filled with despair

Friends going to visit at a tomb
Only to find their teacher no longer there
How could a gracious God allow this
It all just seemed unbelievably unfair

So many emotions to follow
Doubt, confusion, sadness and fear
Soon would be replaced with peace
As they learned their risen king was near

His resurrection held joy and hope
Still offered for me and for you
Death could not hold our Savior
He had risen; a promise held true

Thank you God for Sunday
A reminder that our King reigns
We know our Sunday will come AGAIN
And because of that, hope remains!!

Slow Down Sis…my second book hit Amazon Prime this morning 💕

This is the second book in a 3 book series-Slow Down Sister. The first one was focused on praying for your hubby…but this one is for YOU! Over the last few years, God has really revealed to me the things in my life that were hindering me from experiencing true peace and fulfillment. Most days I felt like a complete failure, because like so many women my age, I was caught up in the ripping and running of this life. Having a full time job and being a wife and mom isn’t for the weak...I know-but, we can’t tap into His strength if we are unwilling to give Him control. I had no idea how tightly I was holding on to the things of this world until I started to feel like I had lost control. This devotional serves as a reminder that you don’t have to have it all figured out! We are called to surrender, yall. And it’s in our true surrender that He meets us with peace and grace 💕

Get your copy by Saturday if you order today! Also, if you ordered my first book, please consider leaving a review on Amazon. It helps them stay as prime items, but more importantly will broaden my reach of ministry outside of Loranger.

Thank you all for your never-ending support…it means more than you know!!

When we struggle to manage everything and navigate challenges alone, it's common to feel like we've failed. However, during overwhelming times, God invites us to turn to Him. He desires for us to acknowledge our needs and embrace His peace. In our focus on tasks and results, we can lose sight of ...
