Did you know that recovery is more like Diabetes than most people realize?

Between 40% and 60% of people in recovery experience at least one relapse.

That number surprises many people. It shouldn't.

It's comparable to relapse rates for other chronic conditions like hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Yet we rarely call those conditions "failures."

Recovery deserves the same understanding. Relapse isn't proof that treatment didn't work. It's a sign that recovery, like many chronic conditions, requires ongoing management.

The goal is recognizing them early and having a plan to respond.

If we can view diabetes and hypertension with compassion instead of judgment, why should recovery be any different?

One question changed how I think about work stress.

"What do you do when work finally stops?"

Most people answer with what they consume.
🍷 A drink.
📺 Netflix.
📱 Endless scrolling.
💊 Something to help them sleep.

Very few answer with what actually restores them.

A walk. Exercise. Time with family. Reading. Silence.

Recovery isn't the absence of work. It's the presence of activities that rebuild your mind and body.

If your only escape from work is something that numbs you, it may be time to rethink your recovery routine.

Myth: Detox cures addiction.

Reality: Detox is only the beginning.

While detox safely manages withdrawal and stabilizes the body, lasting recovery requires continued treatment, therapy, and ongoing support. Recovery is more than simply removing substances. It's about rebuilding a healthier life.

The first step is important. So is everything that comes after it.

Does rehab actually work? The answer is yes, but perhaps not in the way most people think.

Research shows that effective rehab can reduce substance use, improve mental and physical health, strengthen relationships, and help people reclaim their quality of life. Even relapse doesn't mean treatment has failed. It often means the recovery plan needs to be adjusted, just as it would for other chronic health conditions.

So, what should you expect from Reprieve House?
✔️ Physician-led, evidence-based care
✔️ Personalized treatment plans
✔️ A compassionate team that treats the whole person
✔️ Ongoing support designed for lasting recovery

Recovery is rarely a straight line, but it is absolutely possible with the right treatment, ongoing support, and aftercare.

Recovery isn't just about quitting. It's about rebuilding.

One of the most overlooked aspects of addiction recovery is nutrition.

During active addiction, the body becomes depleted of essential nutrients, making healing even more challenging. Yet fewer than 7% of treatment centers employ a nutritionist, despite the growing evidence that proper nutrition can improve recovery outcomes.

A well-balanced recovery diet can:
‣ Support brain repair and neurotransmitter production
‣ Restore physical strength and immune function
‣ Stabilize blood sugar to reduce mood swings and cravings
‣ Improve gut health, which plays a key role in emotional wellbeing
‣ Build a stronger foundation for long-term recovery

Recovery is about healing the whole person.

When nutrition is combined with medical care, therapy, and ongoing support, individuals are better equipped to regain their health and quality of life.

One of the biggest misconceptions about addiction is that it only affects the person using. In reality, addiction changes entire family systems.

Partners become caregivers. Conversations become conflict. Trust becomes uncertainty.

Many spouses find themselves carrying responsibilities they never expected to carry alone.

Nobody talks about this enough: Recovery often requires disappointing people.

Leaving early. Skipping certain events. Declining invitations. Creating distance from relationships that don't support healing.

For people who spent years people-pleasing or avoiding conflict, this can feel incredibly uncomfortable.

Sometimes the healthiest thing someone in recovery can say is:

"I can't do that right now."

Our latest blog explores how boundaries support long-term recovery.

“How long will treatment take?”

It’s one of the first questions families ask when considering rehab.

The honest answer? Long enough for healing to start and often longer than people expect.

While a 30-day program can be an important first step, research consistently shows that outcomes improve significantly when individuals remain engaged in structured treatment for 90 days or more.

Why? Because recovery is more than just stopping substance use. It’s about giving the brain time to heal, building new coping skills, addressing underlying mental health challenges, and creating a foundation for life after treatment.

At Reprieve House, we believe treatment timelines should be guided by clinical progress, not arbitrary calendars or insurance billings.

Choosing a rehab center can feel overwhelming. Every website promises compassionate care, individualized treatment, and lasting recovery.

But not every program offers the same level of clinical support.

Before making a decision, ask these questions:
✓ Is detox medically supervised 24/7?
✓ Does the program treat co-occurring mental health conditions?
✓ Are physicians actively involved in care?
✓ Is treatment personalized?
✓ What happens after discharge?
✓ How does the program respond to relapse?

The right questions can reveal the difference between a program focused on marketing and one focused on outcomes.

At Reprieve House, we encourage families to ask difficult questions, compare options, and find the program that best fits their clinical, medical, and personal needs.

Choosing treatment is a significant decision. Having the right information can make that decision easier.
