Mother and child are born.

I can't find poetry for this post. The simple facts are poetic enough, and words can't jump high enough to reach how I feel anyway.

This is Petra. She's two weeks old now. We didn't know she was a girl until about five minutes after I guided her little body from my womb to my chest.

The effort and trust it took to bring her here were the biggest challenges of my life, but somehow still simple. Without any medical assistance, without a doula, without anyone but the steady and remarkably trusting presence of , I allowed birth to unfold.

Just ALLOWING is the hardest work.

I enjoyed the exciting and easy beginning of labor with a dip in the river, and sustained through the painful days (yes, days) with patience and tears.

I am deeply proud of myself. Proud of my confidence, my intuition, my body awareness, and my fortitude. I'm proud of my daughter- this beautiful and sweet small human, so strong and so vigorous from the moment she touched down.
