People say “just eat a steak.” Or chicken. Or salmon. Reasonable — except all three are muscle meat, and muscle meat is one of the worse ways to eat collagen.

Collagen is connective tissue. It’s in tendon, skin, cartilage and bone — the parts most people trim off and throw away. A steak serving carries somewhere between 0.2 and 2.5 g depending on the cut. Beef tendon carries up to 13.3 g. Same animal, twelve-fold difference across cuts alone.

Marine collagen is the clearest example of this. It’s made from fish skin, not from the fillet you eat.

And switching to tendon and skin doesn’t fully solve it either. You’d be eating whole collagen, not the specific pre-cut fragments the trials used — and you’d have no idea what dose you actually got, because it varies with the cut, the animal and how long it cooked. An Achilles rupture takes close to a year to come back from. Here’s why the timeline is that long.

It’s the strongest tendon in the human body — and under one violent push-off, its collagen fibres can shear apart almost all at once.

Which sounds like a technicality until you realise nitrogen doesn’t only come from protein. Glycine carries nitrogen. So do taurine and creatine. They’re far cheaper than whey or milk protein, and the standard test can’t tell them apart from the real thing. Add enough and the protein number on the label rises without anything useful going into the tub. The industry name for it is amino spiking, and it’s a known enough problem that certification labs run two separate protein scans and subtract one from the other specifically to catch it.

To be clear — creatine is a genuinely good ingredient and pairs perfectly well with a protein routine. The objection isn’t creatine. It’s counting it as protein.

That sits on top of everything else a tub tends to carry: sucralose, acesulfame potassium, maltodextrin, carrageenan, xanthan gum, soy lecithin, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, artificial flavors. Sweeteners to cover the taste, gums to fix the texture, flow agents to stop it clumping, bulking agents to fill it out.
