Since having a baby, I keep thinking about the phrase “getting back to yourself.”

I understand the longing inside it.

To recognize your body. Your time. Your mind. Your desires. To feel familiar to yourself again.

But “back” is a strange direction to prescribe after something has changed you.

I love the woman I was before Elle. She built this life. She is not gone.

But she had never held my daughter.

She had never been asked to reorganize a life around this particular kind of love and responsibility.

I cannot return to a version of myself who had not lived this.

Maybe returning to yourself isn’t a backward journey.

Maybe it is coming into deeper contact with what remains true after life changes shape.

Motherhood is the threshold I’m standing in.

Yours may have another name.

A relationship. An ending. An ambition you can no longer pretend not to have. A truth that made your old life feel different once you admitted it.

Not every transformation asks you to become someone new.

Sometimes it asks you to meet yourself again, with more of your life included.
