When one person gets louder and the other shuts down, neither person is really being heard.
I often describe these two reactive patterns as the hailstorm and the turtle.
The hailstorm expands when upset—pushing to talk, getting louder, needing resolution now.
The turtle goes inward—getting quiet, avoiding conflict, needing to escape the intensity.
And the more one pursues, the more the other retreats.
The answer isn’t deciding who’s right.
It’s learning the third option: how to meet in the middle without all that reactivity.
That starts with understanding what’s happening in your nervous systems, regulating together, and learning how to have the conversation once you’re both able to actually hear each other.
This is exactly the kind of work we’ll practice together at my 3-day Couples Retreat in Ojai this October. ❤️
And if you’ve been considering coming, don’t wait too long:
4 of the 6 couples spots are already taken.
Only 2 remain.
