Many women going through menopause report struggling with memory lapses, trouble concentrating and slower thinking, a set of symptoms often described as brain fog.

A new study by Dr. Rhonda Voskuhl suggests an estrogen hormone treatment combining estriol and progesterone may help ease these symptoms, offering an early but potentially promising way to address a menopause-related symptom for which there is currently no FDA-approved treatment.

Congratulations to Dr. Ranmal Samarasinghe on receiving a CURE Epilepsy Bridge to Breakthrough Award to study SCN8A-related epilepsy, a severe genetic disorder that begins in childhood and often does not respond to current anti-seizure medications.

His lab discovered that the disease may cause developing brain cells to take on the wrong identity, disrupting cells and circuits important for learning and memory. With support from the award, his team will investigate whether correcting this developmental error can restore brain function, potentially paving the way for treatments that address the underlying disease rather than seizures alone.
