Boundaries are not punishment.

"I love you, and I won't live in a home where there are drugs."

"I'll help you find treatment, and I won't give you money while you're using."

Both sentences are love. The second half is what gives the first half weight.

What if everything you think you know about opioids is incomplete?

The opioid crisis has been fueled not only by addiction and fentanyl, but also by misinformation, fear, stigma, and confusion.

Opiates.org was created to provide free, evidence-based education about opioids, dependence, withdrawal, treatment options, fentanyl, and recovery.

"Just stop." "Show some willpower." "It's a choice."

If addiction worked that way, no one would struggle. But it doesn't — and the science is clear.

Addiction is a medical condition that physically changes the brain's reward and decision-making systems. It's not a moral failing. And here's what most people get wrong: addiction, physical dependence, and mental health conditions are deeply connected but NOT the same thing — and they don't share the same treatment.

✅ Physical dependence → managed with medical detox
✅ Addiction → treated with behavioral and psychological care
✅ Co-occurring mental health conditions → treated together, not separately

Understanding the difference can change — and save — a life.

After 28 years around opioid recovery, I've watched families make life-altering decisions in the worst moments of their lives, often armed with the wrong information. The same myths come up again and again. That detox is the finish line.

That suffering through withdrawal somehow builds character.
That all treatment programs are basically the same.

That medication is just trading one addiction for another.
None of these are true. And the cost of believing them can be devastating.
I wrote a piece this week naming the 7 myths I find myself correcting most often. It's not a polite article. It says some things the addiction treatment industry would rather not say out loud, including the way insurance reimbursement, not clinical reasoning, often determines how long programs last.
I shared it because families deserve better than what they're currently being told.
If you have a loved one navigating this, or if you know someone who does, please share this. The right information at the right time can change everything.

Opioid treatment myths shape the decisions families make under pressure. Learn what families need to know before choosing a program, and the questions every program should be asked.

Every family touched by addiction knows the moment.
The whispered "I'm ready."
The relief. The fear.
And then the panic of what now?
Too many families lose that fragile moment of hope because the system is too hard to navigate.
So I built something. 🤍

🚗 Did you know your breathalyzer can read 0.00 — and you can still be dangerously impaired behind the wheel?

Prescription pain pills like hydrocodone and oxycodone affect the same parts of the brain that control your reaction time, judgment, coordination, and vision. And the scariest part? Most people on opioids don't feel impaired — even when they are.

We just published a new article that explains exactly what's happening in your brain when you drive on pain medication — and what the warning signs look like before something goes wrong.

👉 Read it here: https://www.rapiddetox.com/drug-addiction-help/driving-on-pain-pills-opioid-impaired-driving/
