So much of the work I've been doing with my clients (via telehealth, of course) over the last two weeks has been helping them understand that they are not lazy, they are not unproductive, there is nothing wrong with them for finding it impossible to complete tasks they might normally be able to. This time is NOT NORMAL. We are going through a collective, global trauma right now and our brains have no frame of reference for how this will play out. For some people, this might mean that every time we've ever felt powerless, scared, alone or in danger can be activated as our subconscious searches for a nonexistent puzzle piece to try to make sense of this current experience.
BE KIND to yourself. If baking, gardening, cooking or cleaning bring you peace, then use that resource - even better if you can create a predictable routine, something to count on and expect in this time of incredible uncertainty. But please don't beat yourself up if you can't muster the energy or focus right now. Cocooning yourself and surviving this moment might be the main priority to focus on, and that is enough. Surround yourself with comfort in any way you can - take deep breaths, walk around the block in the sunshine, smile and greet your neighbor from across the street, make yourself a cup of tea and watch your favorite show, wrapped up in a soft blanket, and please reach out for support. We are all going through this together.
