Should you use music in your yoga class?
The answer is: it depends.
Years ago, I asked my Guru, Sri Swami Vidyanand, the same question. His response was simple yet profound: if a teacher has cultivated enough presence and depth in their own practice, they can guide students inward without relying on external stimulation.
Music can be a beautiful tool. It can help people relax, settle the mind, and transition from the busyness of daily life. There is nothing inherently wrong with that.
But at some point, every yoga teacher must ask themselves: Am I using this as a tool, or as a crutch?
In traditional ashrams and authentic yogic settings, you'll often find very little external sound. The environment itself becomes the music. The teacher speaks only when necessary. The silence becomes the teaching.
If your goal is relaxation, music may support the experience.
If your goal is transformation, eventually you must learn to guide students beyond the need for it.
Yoga begins where dependence ends.
