Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has named his perfect rock album in an interview with BBC Radio 6 Music. "I have many records I consider perfect, but one that comes to mind is Pixies' 'Surfer Rosa'. I love that record for many reasons. Charles, the Pixies singer, was an incredible lyricist. His lyrics balanced between intellectual abstraction and things that sounded absurd and almost silly. The combination of his voice and Kim Deal's (bassist) was a wonderful mix. That dynamic was unusual at the time. I've probably listened to that record 10,000 times and I still love it."

"Surfer Rosa" was released in March 1988 and, although it wasn't a commercial success at the time, it became one of the most important albums in alternative rock. Its influence extended directly to the early 90s grunge movement. Kurt Cobain openly stated that "Surfer Rosa" was the foundation and inspiration for Nirvana's "Nevermind" (1991), which sold over 30 million copies. The volume dynamics and raw emotional tension that Albini captured on "Surfer Rosa" can be heard throughout the Nirvana album.

Mastodon members have shared a 35-minute video in which they reflect on their relationship with co-founder, guitarist, and vocalist Brent Hinds, who passed away in a motorcycle accident in August 2025, five months after his departure from the band. "Losing him has meant sitting with a kind of pain we never expected. Brent was our family, someone we loved wholeheartedly. He was a wild man, our wild man, and that brought some challenges. Both things are true, and we're not interested in chasing one truth over the other. We miss the hugs, the high-fives, the disagreements, and the reconciliations. That part has been difficult, it's real."

Brent Hinds left Mastodon in March 2025, after 25 years in the band. The band announced at the time that the split had been "mutual." However, Hinds later claimed that he had been fired and called his former bandmates "horrible human beings." The band had not spoken publicly about the matter until now.

Hinds passed away on August 20, 2025, in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta, Georgia. According to reports, he was riding a Harley-Davidson when he was struck by an SUV turning left. Investigators determined that Hinds was speeding (between 63 and 68 mph in a 35 mph zone) and that he was responsible for the accident.

Following Hinds' departure, the band hired guitarist Nick Johnston (a Canadian musician with six solo albums) as his replacement. Mastodon recently released a new single, "Your Ghost Again", which is a tribute to Hinds. The band is working on their ninth studio album, expected for late 2026.

The version, available exclusively on the Subvert platform, returns the songs to their original state: purely instrumental, raw, and unfiltered.

London commented: "This is the music in its true original format, raw, as it was always meant to be experienced. Being an instrumental project at its core, I felt it was time to release it. Tesla guitarist Dave Rude has explained in an interview why the band does not plan to release a full album of new original material in the near future. According to Rude, the time and effort required to record a full record are not worth it, since fans only want to hear the classics live. Instead, the band prefers to release singles individually.

"Shock is one of my favorite records, but we put a lot of time and effort into it, and in the end we can only include two songs in the live setlist. It's a big problem having too many classics. We have to play 85% of the set with songs we can't stop playing. Making a full 12-song album isn't worth it, because people want to hear the songs from their youth. If we make a record, we'd have to stop touring, we'd make less money, and our crew wouldn't work. At the end of the day, people want to hear the old songs, so why not keep touring?"

Instead of a full album, Tesla has been releasing singles individually, such as "All About Love" (2024) and "Time To Rock!" (2023). This approach allows them to write, record, and release a song without the pressure of a full record. Additionally, they can include the song in the setlist without saturating the show with too many new tracks.

Tesla will release a covers album titled "Homage" on July 17, 2026, through Frontiers Music Srl. The album includes covers of classics by Queen, Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, Etta James, and James Brown, among others. It is the band's first album since "Shock" (2019) and the first with drummer Steve Brown (who replaced Troy Luccketta in 2021).

Tesla's other guitarist, Frank Hannon, also spoke on the subject: "It doesn't make sense for us to try to fabricate 10 songs for a record. We prefer to enjoy the process and release one song at a time. We're experimenting with soul and R&B covers, like James Brown or The Temptations. It's more fun."
