“The real transformations in you are often very profound, deep and often very slow – they are inevitable and irrevocable.

Once you have started to awaken, you can’t turn back. It is going to go on no matter what.”

- Ram Dass

When I first began my spiritual journey,

I thought transformation would happen quickly.

I read a book,
attended a workshop,
had a profound experience,

and believed my life would change almost immediately.

But real transformation rarely happens that way.

Instead,

it often unfolds very slowly.

Like a seed planted deep in the soil.

For weeks,
months,
sometimes even years,

it seems as though nothing is happening.

Yet beneath the surface,

everything is quietly changing.

Roots are growing.

The soil is shifting.

Life is doing its work.

Then one day,

I look back and realize that I am no longer the same person I once was.

Not because I became someone else.

But because something within me gradually changed.

I no longer react the way I used to.

I no longer stay angry as long as I once did.

I am no longer carried away so easily by old fears.

I no longer completely believe every thought that appears in my mind.

This is what Ram Dass called the transformations that are

“profound, deep, and slow.”

So if there is one thing I would say to anyone beginning this journey,

it is this:

be patient.

There will be times when

you move forward,

then seem to stand still,

then begin to doubt,

then feel as though you are moving backward,

and even forget what you once understood.

But if the seed of awakening has been planted,

life will continue to nourish it.

Through:

joy,

loss,

love,

failure,

the people you meet,

and even through crisis.

Because real transformation is not always visible while it is happening.

But one day,

when you look back,

you may be surprised by how far you have come.

So often, it’s not the emotion that overwhelms us - it’s the narrative we wrap around it.

The mind is brilliant at spinning tales:

Why does this always happen to me?
What did they mean by that?
How is this going to turn out?

And before we know it, a single feeling becomes a full-blown saga.

But what if, instead, we simply felt the feeling?

In meditation, we practice exactly that. We sit. We breathe. A wave of sadness arises, and instead of building a courtroom case around it, we soften, and allow. We notice where it lives in the body - in a heavy chest, or clenched jaw. We let it move.

Feelings are energy in motion, while the stories we tell ourselves become a glue.

When we drop the story, we stop reinforcing old patterns. We stop hardening around the situations in our lives. We stop turning temporary weather into permanent climate.

You don’t have to suppress your emotions, or try to fix or justify them. You just need to feel them, and drop the story around them.

Does this resonate with you? Tell me about it below!

You don’t have to do anything to earn it. Your shortcomings, your lack of self-esteem, physical perfection, or social and economic success - none of that matters. No one can take this love away from you, and it will always be here. - Ram Dass
