Total Intravenous Anesthesia (TIVA) is a modern alternative to traditional gas-based anesthesia, using IV medications to keep you safely and comfortably asleep during your procedure.

Because TIVA doesn’t rely on inhaled agents, many patients experience less nausea, a faster recovery, and a clearer, more comfortable wake-up. It also allows for more precise control of anesthesia levels, making it an excellent option for outpatient surgeries, neurological procedures, and patients who are sensitive to inhaled gases.

If you're looking for a smoother anesthesia experience with fewer side effects, TIVA may be the right fit for you. Have questions about whether it’s an option for your next procedure? We’re here to help, just reach out.

FAQ Friday: How do you decide how much anesthesia someone gets?

There’s no standard dose. Every anesthesia plan is customized to the patient.

Your anesthesiologist looks at things like your weight, medical history, current medications, the procedure you’re having, and how your body may respond to certain medications. All of that helps determine what’s safest and most effective for you.

And it’s not a “set it and forget it” process either.

You’re monitored continuously throughout surgery, so anesthesia can be adjusted in real time to keep you comfortable, stable, and safe the entire procedure.

A lot more precise goes into anesthesia than most people realize.

FAQ Friday!: “Will someone actually be watching me the whole time?”

Yes. Not occasionally. Not in the background. The entire time.

During anesthesia, there is a provider whose sole responsibility is monitoring you. They’re not assisting with the procedure. They’re not multitasking. They are reading your vitals moment by moment and adjusting as needed.

Most people assume sedation means “go to sleep and hope for the best.”
In reality, it’s controlled, measured, and actively managed from start to finish.

If you’ve been putting off treatment because you don’t like the idea of being unaware, this is usually the piece that changes things.

How Fast Does Anesthesia Work? ⏳💉

The effects of anesthesia kick in quickly, often within seconds to minutes, depending on the type used. IV anesthesia typically takes effect in under 30 seconds, while inhaled anesthesia may take a minute or two. Your anesthesiologist carefully monitors the process to ensure you’re comfortable and fully sedated before your procedure begins.

FAQ FRIDAY: Is there a risk of nausea or dizziness?
Nausea and dizziness are common concerns, especially if you’ve experienced them before or heard someone else’s story. The honest answer is that they can happen with certain types of anesthesia, but for most patients, if they occur at all, they’re mild and short-lived.

More importantly, this isn’t something we leave to chance. We plan for it by adjusting medications, monitoring how your body responds, and supporting you through recovery to keep you comfortable. Once people understand that, the concern usually shifts from “Will this happen to me?” to “If it does, how is it handled?” And that part is already built into the process.

If you’ve had nausea before or you’re worried about it, let us know ahead of time so we can tailor your care accordingly.

A local anesthetic block is a method used to numb a specific area of the body to prevent pain during a procedure or surgery. At G2 Anesthesia, we use this technique to provide targeted pain relief while keeping the patient awake and alert.

Here's how it works: A local anesthetic, such as lidocaine or bupivacaine, is injected near a nerve or group of nerves that supply sensation to the area being treated. This prevents the nerves from sending pain signals to the brain, effectively numbing the targeted region.

Local anesthetic blocks are commonly used for minor surgeries, where complete sedation isn't necessary. It’s a safe and effective way to manage pain, allowing for quicker recovery and a more comfortable experience overall. At G2 Anesthesia, we ensure that each patient receives the appropriate block based on their unique needs and the procedure being performed.
