Your daily smoothie might be tougher on your teeth than you think.☘️ And it is not really the smoothie itself (it is how most people drink it.)
Why smoothies are uniquely hard on enamel:
• They are highly acidic, usually in the same pH range as citrus juice
• Even no-added-sugar versions can carry as much sugar as some sodas -- banana, mango, and OJ add up fast
• Slow sipping means your teeth are in contact with that acid for a long stretch of time
• They often replace water, so there is no hydration buffer afterward
The fix is simpler than you think:
Start with a glass of water before you even touch the smoothie. Then use a straw -as it keeps most of the acid away from your front teeth. Try to finish it within 10 to 15 minutes rather than sipping on it for an hour. Once you're done, rinse with water right away.
Same smoothie. A lot less wear over time.
