Across the country, Home Instead teams are showing up with purpose at Walk to End Alzheimer’s events—walking in honor of loved ones, supporting families and raising critical funds for the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. 💜

We are proud to partner with the ’sAssociation as a Walk to End Alzheimer’s Gold National Team. Together, Home Instead has raised more than $5.7 million over the past 18 years, including $258,000 last year alone, to advance Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

This year, we are well on our way to reaching our goal—and every donation and every step makes a meaningful difference. Thank you to every Care Pro, office team member, client, family member and community partner who walks, fundraises and helps move this mission forward.

When searching for a senior living community, touring more than one place can make all the difference.

Look beyond the amenities and notice the everyday interactions: Do team members know residents by name? Do they speak directly to the person who may live there? Does the community feel warm, personal and welcoming?

In this Caregiver Chats clip, Dr. Lakelyn and Nicole Will share why comparing communities can help families find the right fit for their loved one.

One tour rarely tells the whole story.

When you’re exploring senior living options for someone you love, visit more than one community—and pay attention to the details that reveal how people are truly cared for.

Are residents greeted by name? Are conversations warm and personal? Does the team speak directly to the older adult, not just their family?

Sometimes the clearest answer comes from comparing how each place feels.

Touring senior living communities for a loved one? Look beyond the scheduled visit.

In this clip from Caregiver Chats, Nicole Will shares why it can be helpful to stop by at a different time—like an evening or weekend—and notice the everyday experience. Are residents interacting naturally? Do team members seem calm, attentive and familiar with the people they support?

The right community is about more than the building. It’s about finding a place where your loved one can feel connected, valued and at home.

A scheduled tour can show you the highlights. An unscheduled visit can show you everyday life.

When you’re considering a senior living community for someone you love, Nicole Will suggests stopping by at a different time—an evening or weekend—and paying attention to what you see.

Are residents connecting? Does the team seem calm and engaged? Do people know one another by name?

It’s not just about finding a place to live. It’s about finding a place where your loved one can feel known, connected and at home.

When families begin exploring senior living, it’s easy to focus on the building first: the amenities, the dining room, the activity calendar.

But as Nicole Will () reminds us, the better place to begin is with the person.

What brings your loved one joy? Where do they find purpose? What kind of connection will help them feel known and at home?

In this episode of Caregiver Chats, Dr. Lakelyn and Nicole share a more person-centered way to approach one of caregiving’s biggest decisions.

Dementia care obviously has more challenges than nearly any other kind of caregiving. Consider Home Instead® Care Professional of the Month Jasmine Korte’s approach to assisting a client with moderate to severe dementia: “Even though some might have labeled her as a problem, I quickly perceived she needed people who had time, energy and patience to meet her where she was in her life’s journey and work with her appropriately to make her life easier.”

Jasmine had her work cut out for her, but as the weeks went by, Jasmine learned the client’s behavioral cues and how best to help her:

•“My client’s demeanor might be considered prickly by some, but the truth was she just needed more understanding than she was getting. Patience, empathy and compassion were ‘musts.’ ”
•“I learned that, despite her dementia, my client was still physically quite strong. I had to account for that.”
•“I also learned something as simple as using a big cup of warm water to wash her head instead of the shower turned what would usually be a fight to be bathed into an almost pleasant cleaning experience for her.”
•“I always was attentive during my overnight shifts because my client had the habit of getting up multiple times each night and wandering the halls of her memory care unit. Sometimes she’d wander into other residents’ rooms, and issues would ensue.”
•“I learned she appreciated having her hand held while she wandered so she knew I was there, and I could help guide her much easier than following behind her.”

Did you know dementia can affect people under age 65?

When someone is still working, raising a family, or making plans for the future, cognitive changes can be easy to explain away or dismiss.

While age is the biggest risk factor for dementia, younger-onset dementia can happen. If changes in memory, thinking, or behavior feel unexplained, it is okay to ask questions and seek answers.

Have you ever been afraid to seek answers about changes in someone you love? That fear is completely understandable.

But getting a diagnosis does not change what is happening. It can help families understand the changes they are seeing, find support, explore care options, and plan for what comes next.

You do not need to have every answer today. Sometimes one step toward clarity can make the road ahead feel a little less overwhelming.

For many adult children, the time comes when you have to have a difficult conversation with your aging parents. Perhaps it’s because the electricity got cut off because Mom or Dad forgot to pay the bill. Or maybe one of them had a car accident. Even a fender-bender can trigger one of those “you shouldn’t be driving anymore” talks.

These common signs may indicate that an older adult might need more help. Having these conversations with our parents can be hard. Nobody enjoys the idea of a confrontation.

These tips can help you avoid just that. Use these general strategies to ease those hard conversations and change them into productive meetings that leave everyone feeling heard.
