🔥 Is it too hot for the playground? Here’s your complete guide 👇
Your child is playing outside. They say they feel “weird.” Is it heat exhaustion… or heat stroke? One you can handle at home. The other is a 911 call. 🚑
🟡 HEAT EXHAUSTION: Heavy sweating, nausea, dizziness, cool clammy skin → Move to shade, cool towels, sip water.
🔴 HEAT STROKE: No sweating, hot red skin, confusion, temp over 104°F → CALL 911. Cool immediately. Don’t wait.
🆘 WHAT TO DO:
→ Move to shade or AC right away
→ Cool them down with wet towels and a fan
→ Offer small sips of water
→ If they’re not improving in 15 min or seem confused, call 911
→ For heat stroke: ice packs to neck, armpits, groin — DO NOT give fluids if unconscious
✅ BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT:
→ Check the heat index
→ Touch the equipment first — metal slides can hit 150°F+
→ Pack extra water
→ Light, loose clothing + sunscreen
→ Shade breaks every 15–20 min
Kids overheat faster than adults. Their bodies can’t regulate temperature the way ours can. This summer, know the signs — because minutes matter. ⏱️

Everybody’s exhausted. Everybody’s moody. Nobody knows why. Blame summer before you blame the screens. 🌙

Your brain only starts releasing melatonin in response to darkness — so when the sun is still up at 8:30pm and lights are on inside, your brain reads that as daytime and holds off. That delay pushes your whole sleep cycle back, even when your alarm doesn’t move.

Heat compounds it. The ideal sleep environment is between 65 and 68°F. Your core body temperature has to drop to enter and maintain deep sleep, and a warm room fights that process all night. You can be in bed for eight hours and still miss the restorative deep sleep your body needs.

But if you’re controlling for both and still not restored, here’s what I look at:

Magnesium glycinate — depleted by activity and stress, essential for deep sleep and nervous system downregulation. One of the most common deficiencies I see in both adults and kids.

Melatonin timing — 0.5 to 1mg taken 60 minutes before your target bedtime outperforms high doses at lights out. It’s a signal, not a sedative.

Cortisol rhythm — wired at night and groggy in the morning isn’t just a habit. It’s a dysregulated curve. Morning light, consistent wake time, and sometimes adaptogenic support can reset it.

Sleep is depth and rhythm, not just hours. If you’re ready to look at the whole picture, that’s what we do.

🫀 This is one of the reasons I want your child at every recommended well visit.

Heart murmurs.

I find them with a stethoscope. Not at a sick visit, not over the phone — at a well visit, when I have the time and the quiet to actually listen.

In infancy, those early visits are critical. The appointments aren’t just about growth and vaccines. Some congenital heart differences don’t show up right away. A baby can look completely healthy while something is quietly going on. I need to be listening during that first year.

In school-age kids, this is exactly why I take the sports physical seriously. Before I clear a child to play, I listen. A murmur that seemed innocent at age 4 looks different when a child is about to start competitive athletics. Undetected heart conditions are one of the leading causes of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes — and a thorough exam is one of the best tools we have.

Most murmurs are innocent. Just the sound of a healthy, growing heart doing its job. But some aren’t — and there is no way to know without the exam.

Keep the appointments. Every single one. 💙

🫀 One of the reasons I want your child at every recommended well visit — and especially in that first year of life.

Heart murmurs.

I can’t find them over the phone. I can’t find them at a sick visit when I’m focused on a fever or an ear. I find them when your child is sitting in front of me, feeling totally fine — and I put my stethoscope on their chest.

Those infant well visits — they aren’t just about vaccines and growth charts. Some congenital heart differences don’t make themselves known until the newborn high is over and a baby is a few weeks or months into life. That’s exactly when I need to be listening.

And for school-age kids? This is exactly why the sports physical is not something to skip. Before I clear a child to play, I listen. A murmur that was innocent at age 4 needs to be reassessed at age 10 before that child hits the field. Undetected heart differences are one of the leading causes of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes — and a thorough exam is one of our best tools to catch them.

Most murmurs are innocent. Just the sound of a healthy, growing heart. But some aren’t — and the only way to know the difference is to listen. Regularly. Over time.

With 17+ years in pediatric care, I’ve had this conversation with a lot of families. The ones that stay with me are the kids we caught early — because their parents kept the appointment.

Book every recommended well visit. It matters more than you think. 💙

☀️ Summer is here, and sun protection doesn’t have to be complicated!

Remember the simple rule:

👕 Slip on protective clothing
🧴 Slop on broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen
🧢 Slap on a hat

A few extra tips:
✔️ Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours
✔️ Reapply after swimming or sweating
✔️ Don’t forget ears, lips, tops of feet, and the back of the neck
✔️ Seek shade during peak sun hours (10 AM–4 PM)

Sunburns can happen quickly, especially in children, and protecting skin now helps reduce the risk of skin damage later in life.

Have fun outside, but don’t forget to Slip, Slop, and Slap! ☀️

I recommend supplements to my patients all the time — and I stand behind that. But this is your reminder that not all supplements are created equal, and the FDA cannot protect you before a product hits shelves.

Here’s the truth: the FDA only regulates supplements after the fact. That means products can be sold, purchased, and consumed before anyone catches a problem. And lately? There have been some serious ones.

⚠️ Recent recalls worth knowing:

Tejocote root supplements — multiple brands were found to contain toxic yellow oleander, a poisonous plant that can cause heart arrhythmias, neurological damage, and in some cases, death. Several companies refused to recall their products even after the FDA intervened.

Primal Herbs Volume — found to contain sildenafil (the active ingredient in Vi**ra) — completely undeclared on the label. Dangerous for anyone taking heart medications.

Vital Nutrients Aller-C — a brand I know many of you are familiar with — was recalled earlier this year for undeclared allergens including egg, hazelnut, and soy. Potentially life-threatening for allergy sufferers. The issue was discovered through routine internal testing and promptly reported to the FDA. This is actually what responsible companies do — but it’s a reminder that even reputable brands are not immune.

So what do you do with this information?

✅ Buy from a medical dispensary or provider-recommended source
✅ Avoid random storefronts on Amazon
✅ Check the FDA recall database regularly
✅ Always tell your provider every supplement you take

Supplements can be powerful, effective tools. I use them in my practice and I believe in them. But your sourcing and your awareness matter just as much as the supplement itself.

☀️ Summer isn’t just for pool days — it’s one of the BEST times to get ahead on ADHD management. Whether you’re navigating this for your child or yourself, here’s what’s worth exploring while schedules slow down:

🧬 MTHFR Testing
This genetic variant affects how your body processes folate — and it matters a lot for ADHD. Those with MTHFR variants may have impaired methylation, directly impacting dopamine and serotonin production. If you don’t know your status, ask your provider. It can change everything about how you supplement.

🩸 Iron/Ferritin Levels
Low ferritin is one of the most under-recognized contributors to ADHD symptoms at any age. Iron is essential for dopamine synthesis, and ferritin can be low even when a standard CBC looks normal. Request a ferritin level specifically — don’t let this one get missed.

💊 Summer = supplement trial season
A slower schedule means a better window to trial and actually observe what’s working. Some worth discussing with your provider:
→ Magnesium glycinate (sleep + calm focus)
→ Omega-3s (mood + brain inflammation)
→ Zinc + Methylfolate (especially if MTHFR+)
→ Saffron — promising research for dopamine and serotonin support
→ Functional mushrooms — Lion’s Mane for cognition, Reishi for stress and sleep
→ ENLYTE — a prescription medical food for ADHD with methylation challenges. Ask your provider if it’s a fit.

Summer gives us the time to observe, adjust, and optimize. Use it. 🙌

Drop your questions below 👇 and save this for your next appointment!

Nothing here is medical advice. Work with your provider to determine what’s right for you or your child.

So proud of you, Azure! 💙🐴

You’ve worked so hard for this, and it’s been so fun watching you and Elle grow together this past year. There have been a lot of early mornings, long days, and miles put in to get here. Also can’t forget to mention the coach that has been there through it all to build you up- Sarah Younger

I can’t wait to head to AEC later this summer and cheer you on. No matter how it goes, getting there is a huge accomplishment, and you should be proud of yourself.

Now let’s make some memories and have some fun! ❤️
