Epic leg day todayš®āšØšµāš«. Did you know thereās a direct correlation of leg strength/muscle mass to your life span?
The research consistently shows that greater leg muscle mass and, even more importantly, leg strength are strongly associated with a longer lifespan and lower risk of disease. This has been observed in many large studies, particularly in middle-aged and older adults.
Hereās why leg muscle seems to matter so much:
* Your legs contain the largest muscles in your body. Maintaining them requires regular movement and resistance training, which improves cardiovascular health, insulin sensitivity, and metabolism.
* Leg strength predicts function. People with stronger legs are less likely to fall, fracture a hip, or lose independence as they age.
* Muscle acts like an endocrine organ. Working large muscle groups releases beneficial signaling molecules (myokines) that reduce inflammation and improve overall health.
* More muscle improves glucose control. The muscles in your legs are a major storage site for glucose, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease.
Strength may matter more than size
Interestingly, studies often find that leg strength (how much force you can produce) is an even better predictor of longevity than muscle size alone.
