Happy anniversary, Sylvia and Doug! 🥂 The couple from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, who were married at UofL Hospital after a cancer diagnosis in June 2025, returned to the hospital to celebrate their one-year anniversary.

The Binders originally had their wedding planned for October 2025, but after receiving the diagnosis, Sylvia expressed to her social worker it was important to be well for her wedding, so the UofL Health team started planning a wedding ceremony and reception with only a few days' notice.

Gynecologic oncologist Sarah Todd, M.D., performed surgery the day after Sylvia's wedding to remove a 12-pound ovarian tumor.

Since discharging, the couple has been enjoying their first year of marriage and, health-wise, Sylvia has been in remission since the tumor was removed, with no chemotherapy or medication needed. Sylvia and Doug were still able to have their fall ceremony, where they exchanged pinky promises since they had already done their vows.

The Metz Culinary Management team surprised Sylvia and Doug with a meal and special accommodations. 🔗 ULHealth.co/4ueYOtB

After being diagnosed with a rare melanoma, Chris Sutton sought a second opinion and found hope at UofL Health – Brown Cancer Center.

Now, after surgery and immunotherapy, his scans show no signs of cancer. His message: Trust your instincts, get screened and never be afraid to seek a second opinion.

Chris, concerned about a lump in his left cheek, had visited his dermatologist in Western Kentucky for melanoma. Originally, Chris, who is from Eddyville, Ky., was told that this lump was just a cyst, but he felt it was something more, so he requested that it be removed.
