Today is World Environment Day!

A healthy environment plays a major role in keeping our communities healthy. Clean air, safe water, and access to green spaces can help reduce illness, improve mental well-being, and support a better quality of life for everyone.

This World Environment Day, take a moment to appreciate the environment around you and consider small ways you can help protect it. When we care for our environment, we help create a healthier future for ourselves and generations to come.

June is PTSD Awareness Month.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. While it is often associated with military service, PTSD can also impact survivors of accidents, natural disasters, violence, and other difficult experiences.

Recognizing the signs and seeking support are important steps toward healing. If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that help is available and recovery is possible.

Meet Carrie Gentry, SLP at Winston Medical Center. Happy , Carrie!

🎓 Where did you receive your education?

Mississippi University for Women - Bachelor of Science and Master of Science

❓What made you choose speech therapy as your career path?

I was a lost college student and read the want ads in the newspaper about a speech therapy position and that sparked my interest. I then met with a professor at MUW, and I was hooked.

🙏 Do you have any mentors or people you’d like to thank for your career experience?

Oh, there are so many. My instructors at MUW Michelle Harmon and Mrs. Hansen.
Kim Carney was a great instructor during my clinical rotations and taught me so much about dysphagia and treatments that you do not learn in the classroom. I would also like to give a BIG shout out to Larita Goforth, SLP at Winston Medical Outpatient. She has been and continues to be a wealth of information for me to get back into evaluating and treating pediatrics.

✅ Do you have any special certifications or areas of focus in your work?

I am certified in LSVT-LOUD and MBSImP

🗣 What’s something you find yourself saying often to your patients?

During LSVT-LOUD sessions "THINK LOUD"

🙃 What do you think is often misunderstood about speech therapy?

The biggest misconception is that Speech Therapist just help people talk. I start my evaluations by telling the patient and family that I assess from the neck up to include swallow, voice, speech, communication, cognition and executive functioning skills.

🩵 What do you appreciate about working for Mid South Rehab Services?

I absolutely love working at Mid South Rehab at Winston Medical Center. The campus is beautiful and I enjoy the variety of settings - long term care, hospital consults and outpatient. I get to treat children, adults and our beloved senior residents.

🥰 What would you like to share about your personal life?

I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I have two wonderful daughters. My hobbies currently include working Mike to renovate our home. I enjoy traveling, boating and time on the beach. I work with an amazing therapy team. Thank you to Jordan, Melanie and Megan for giving me the opportunity to work at Winston Medical.

This week is CPR and AED Awareness Week!

CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival when performed immediately after cardiac arrest.

AEDs are designed for public use and provide voice instructions to guide users through each step.

Every minute without CPR or defibrillation decreases the chance of survival, making quick action critical.

Anyone can become CPR certified. CPR classes are available for teens and adults, and many can be completed in just a few hours.

More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals each year in the United States, highlighting the importance of CPR training in the community.

Learning CPR is a simple skill that can make a lifesaving difference when every second counts!

1. Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you are spending time outdoors. Staying hydrated helps your body regulate its temperature and prevent heat related illnesses.

2. Seek Shade

Take breaks in the shade or in an air conditioned space when temperatures are high. Getting out of the sun for even a short time can help your body cool down.

3. Wear Lightweight Clothing

Choose loose fitting, light colored clothing whenever possible. Breathable fabrics can help keep you cooler and more comfortable in the heat.

4. Avoid Peak Heat Hours

Try to limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. Planning ahead can help reduce your risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

5. Know the Warning Signs

Pay attention to symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, or heavy sweating. Recognizing the signs early can help you take action before the situation becomes serious.
