LaVerne Cotton Carter, 95 of Louisville departed this life on Friday, August 28, 2026.

Visitation 10am - 11am Friday, September 4, 2026, at Walters Clement AME Zion Church 4641 E. Indian Trail. Funeral to follow at 11am. Burial Bardstown Cemetery in Bardstown, Kentucky.

On Saturday, December 20, 1930, LaVerne Cotton Carter ("Flusanna”) her father nicknamed her) was born to Lula and Murrell Cotton in Bardstown, Kentucky.

Her happiest years were spent in Bardstown, where she was the sixth of eight children, a member of St. John’s AME Zion Church, and a salutatorian graduate of Bardstown Training High School. She joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and graduated from Kentucky State College with a B.S. Degree. Her first two years of teaching were in Garrard County, Kentucky.

LaVerne married John H. Carter in Baltimore. They moved to Detroit, where John Jr. ("Butch") and Nathaniel ("Nat") were born.
The family later moved to Louisville, where Walter ("The Baby") was born. She was granted a divorce in 1967.

After a twelve-year absence, she resumed teaching in Louisville with the CAC program, Newburg Elementary, Seneca Junior High, and Myers Middle School in Jefferson County, from which she retired after twenty-seven years of service. It was while Vickey was a student of hers at Myers that they adopted one another. She was a member of Walters Clements Memorial AME Zion Church.

To her survivors, and especially her sons and daughter, LaVerne leaves the challenge to dream the impossible dream and to reach their unreachable stars. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons: John Heyward Carter(Lisa) of Louisville, Kentucky; Nathaniel Muir Carter (Carla) of Georgia; Walter Sidney Carter (Tiffany) of Georgia; and one daughter, Vickey Lynn Pettiway of Louisville, Kentucky; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two nieces, Michelle
Anne Shorter and Courtney Cotton; and one nephew,
Michael Elbert Shorter.

LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, Lula and Murrell Cotton,along with beloved siblings and grandchildren.

Thomas D. Summers, 45, of Louisville, transitioned on Saturday, August 1, 2026.

Thomas Denson Summers was born on February 23, 1981, in Louisville, Kentucky to Margaret Summers and Tyrone Davis. He was raised in a large, loving family with siblings Telisa Summers Mitchell, Virginia Roberson (Rabbit), Jeffery Summers, Tina Summers Rodriquez, Regenia Betts, Curtis Summers (Chris), James Andrew Summers (Teddy), Johnathan Summers, and a bonus sister, Nichole Loving.

Thomas was a unique and passionate person with an “old soul.” He enjoyed being around older people and was blessed to have his father, Tyrone Davis, and a father figure, Gus Robinson, Jr. (Popeye), in his life.

Thomas attended Southern High School, where he learned to work on cars, and believed he could fix almost anything. Even so, cooking became one of his greatest joys, and he later served as head chef at Metro Diner when it first opened near Jefferson Mall.

Affectionately known as “Tommy Doo”, Thomas was remembered for his warm, contagious smile. If you saw him coming, his smile arrived first, and it often made others smile or speak in return.

Thomas shared a special bond with his brother Johnathan. Although they did not always see eye to eye, whenever Thomas called and said, “I need you,” Johnathan was there -maybe fussing along the way, but always making sure his brother was okay.

Thomas was also blessed with friends, mentors, and family who spoke wisdom into his life. Anthony Maddox encouraged him and tried to lead him in the right direction, while Rev. Drake and Bro. Hill, his barbers, often shared guidance to help him stay on the right path.

His Aunt Reva had a special way of calming him when no one else could, and Birdie Anderson consistently showed him love with hugs and encouraging words.

Among the many loved ones dear to Thomas, were his nieces and nephews, even when Jream and Jersei, Johnathan’s twins, teased him about not having hair.

Thomas encouraged R. J. to take care of his granny, Margaret. He was a member of King Solomon Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board at an early age. His respectfulness, bright smile, and big eyes left a lasting impression, especially on the “seasoned” ladies who appreciated his kindness after church.

Thomas often reassured others with his favorite words: “It’s okay” and “I’m gonna be alright.” He will truly be missed by all who knew him and all who came in contact with him.

Sadly, and with heavy hearts, Thomas Denson Summers passed on Saturday, August 1, 2026. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Margaret Summers; siblings, Telisa Summers, Regenia Summers-Betts, Johnathan Summers; uncles, Joseph “Haney” Wayne Summers, Garry Davis, Donald Davis, Ronald Davis; aunt, Reva Davis; bonus sister, Nichole Loving; and many other relatives, friends, and loved ones whose lives were touched by his presence.

Though Thomas is no longer with us in body, his smile, his spirit, and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May his memory bring comfort, and may his life continue to be celebrated through the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind.

Anthony Martin was born on Wednesday, December 19, 1956, in P*e Wee Valley, Kentucky to Ruth May Bohannon Martin and Charles Benjamin Martin. He was the youngest of nine children.

Anthony’s Christian journey began at an early age when he gave his life to Christ at P*e Wee Valley Baptist Church. In his youth, he attended Oldham County Elementary and Middle School. He later moved to Louisville and graduated from Shawnee High School, where he played on the baseball team. After high school, Tony, as he was affectionately called by family and friends, enrolled at Whitney M. Young Job Corps in Simpsonville, Kentucky, where he earned his certification as a welder. Upon completion, he was gainfully employed by Jeff Boat, just across the bridge in Indiana. After learning of another welding opportunity through family in Washington state, Tony applied and went on to spend many years working for Genie Industries in Tacoma, Washington.

His retirement brought him back to Louisville, Kentucky to spend quality time with his family, especially his children.

Tony was a gentle and caring person who was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a true giver, fun to be around, and rarely in a bad mood. He had a way of bringing out the best in others, and his positive attitude and contagious smile made even difficult moments feel more manageable. He truly lived his life to the fullest.

When in the kitchen, Tony was the frying fish specialist. He felt his fish was second to none and boasted about his frying skills. He was a diehard Seattle Seahawks fan and U of K Wildcats fan. In his down time, he loved watching action movies with the surround sound blasting Bad Boy 1 & 2.

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, Anthony Martin departed this life. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Antonia Thornton-Snead (Christopher); sons Antwuan Thornton and Charles Martin; siblings Frank Martin, Clarice Wright, and Minnie Martin; grandchildren; a host of relatives and friends.

Gregory "BUBBA" Warfield, 73, of Louisville transitioned on Friday, August 7, 2026.

Gregory Warfield was born on Friday, August 15, 1952, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Lorenzo Warfield, Sr. and Josephine Riles Warfield. He was the second of three sons.

When Gregory was born, his older brother could not quite say "brother," and instead called him "Bubba." The nickname stuck, and throughout his life he was lovingly known as Bubba by family and friends. Some people never even knew his name was Gregory. As a child, Bubba was curious, adventurous, and a little mischievous.

Bubba attended Newburg Elementary School, Newburg Middle School, and Seneca High School, where he enjoyed playing both basketball and football.

At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized by the late Rev. Marcus A. McCollom at Greater Faith Baptist Church.

Bubba proudly served in the United States Army from 1972 to 1974 and received an honorable discharge. After returning home to Louisville, he developed a passion for working on cars and repairing things around the house and yard. He was a gifted handyman who could fix just about anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

In his spare time, Bubba enjoyed fishing, pitching horseshoes, playing cards, and was an excellent co****le player. He never met a stranger. Everyone in Newburg knew Bubba. Whether riding his bicycle or cruising through the neighborhood on his riding lawnmower, he was a familiar face throughout the community.

Bubba was truly a people person, kind, friendly, and blessed with a wonderfully crazy sense of humor. One of his favorite greetings was, "Hey, player!" He also had a hearty appetite and enjoyed just about any kind of food. If someone was about to throw away leftovers, Bubba would quickly say, "Don't throw that away, I'll eat it."

On Friday, August 7, 2026, Bubba was called home to take his rest. His toolbox is now closed. The tires have been changed, and the oil has been checked one final time. The calloused, grease-stained hands that could fix almost anything are now still. His tools are at peace, but the memories he made will never cease.

Gregory Warfield, affectionately known as "Bubba," leaves to cherish his memory his brothers, Lorenzo Warfield, Jr. (Deborah) and Larry Warfield, Sr. (Diana); along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

John Leroy Washington, III also known as "Brother", 70, of Louisville transitioned on July 31, 2026.

John Leroy Washington III was born on April 19, 1956, in Shelbyville, Kentucky, to John Washington Jr. and Sarah Ann Overall Washington. He was the only son among their six children. At an early age, he accepted Christ and was baptized at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Shelbyville, Kentucky.

After moving to Louisville, John, affectionately known as “Brother” by family and friends, attended Jefferson County Public Schools. He played soccer and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1974. Following graduation, he attended Kentucky State University for one year before beginning his career at Kroger. However, he soon discovered his true passion: masonry. Brother loved laying brick and could tell you everything there was to know about it, whether you wanted to hear it or not. His dedication to his craft led to a rewarding career, and he later retired from Schott North America.

Brother had a deep love for music and enjoyed DJing as a weekend hobby. He was a devoted University of Louisville Cardinals fan and loved watching classic black-and-white Westerns, especially Gunsmoke. He approached everything in life with enthusiasm and passion. Whether he was playing Spades and dramatically standing up with one hand raised high before slamming down a Joker, or spending time with family and friends, Brother brought laughter, energy, and joy wherever he went. He was especially proud to be a member of the Newburg community.

On July 31, 2026, God called him home to eternal rest. He leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving children, John Dixon, Shavone Dixon, Angela Dixon, and Ronald Irvin; his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his devoted sisters, Cynthia Bolton (Curtis), Mary Bailey, Teresa Washington, Vanessa Washington, and Jacqueline “Jackie” Washington; his special aunt, Lina Collier Birdine; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will miss him dearly.
Brother's legacy of love, laughter, hard work, and unwavering passion for life will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Though he is no longer with us in body, his memory will remain a lasting source of comfort, joy, and inspiration.

Joseph "Joe" Ronald Tucker, Sr. 80, of Louisville transitioned on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

Joseph Ronald Tucker, Sr., was born on April 7, 1946, to Hawkins Tucker and Beulah Weaver Tucker on the outskirts of Louisville, in the Prospect, Kentucky community, located in northeastern Jefferson County. Known as “Joe” to family and friends, he was the ninth of 11 children.

Joe had a wonderful sense of humor that kept his siblings laughing and listening to his folk stories. He attended Jefferson Jacob and Eastern High School before entering the workforce. After a short career as a truck driver, he discovered that his landscaping skills were in high demand. He spent more than 40 years working on Mr. Henry Wallace’s 600-acre farm, Mocada Farms, serving as landscaper, manager, and overseer of the grounds.

Joe enjoyed listening to R&B and country music, following U of L sports, traveling, attending vintage car shows, and supporting the horse racing industry. Above all, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.

For weeks or even months at a time, Joe could be found traveling across the country on his motorcycle. He believed there was no better way to see America than riding through the countryside with a few of his motorcycle buddies.

Throughout his life, Joe was careful with his finances, always believing it was important to save something for a rainy day and not spend everything he earned. He kept a close eye on his balance, making sure he and the bank were in sync.

On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Joseph Ronald Tucker, Sr., accepted Christ through “In the Field Ministry,” under the leadership of Evangelist Sherrelle Lyons Goodwin.

Joseph Ronald Tucker, Sr., departed this life on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Joseph Tucker, Jr., Vonda Tucker, Rhonda Horton, Roshawnda Tucker, Robin Ward, and Cantrell Osborne; sisters, Betty Mitchell (Otis) and Patricia Chatman; best friend, L.C. Carmen Cumal Jones was born on April 11, 1975, in Louisville, KY, to Linda Green and William Jackson. She lived a life filled with many accomplishments, earning multiple degrees throughout her career. Known for being strong-willed, hard-working, and opinionated, Cumal excelled in various medical roles, including CNA, Phlebotomist, and Medical Assistant. She truly believed in working hard for her goals and always doing her best. Outside of work, she enjoyed reading, traveling with her grandkids, going to the casino, and helping those around her. Her warm smile and laughter will be deeply missed.

On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, God called her home to rest. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her adopted children Willie and Shaleta Beal; her mother, Linda Green; and her father, William Jackson. She is also survived by her sister, Tina Jones; her grandchildren, JaNiya, JaCoby, JaCory, and Willie Beal IV; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and lifelong friends.

Jermaine DeRamus was born on October 3, 1971, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Janice Sutherline. Known affectionately as “Jack,” “Tigger,” and “Tinache,” Jermaine was a proud graduate of Taft High School and dedicated his career to the maintenance profession.

Jermaine found his greatest happiness in life’s simple pleasures and in the company of those he loved. An avid outdoorsman, he was never happier than when he was fishing or camping. He was also a passionate fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the UK Wildcats. With a unique gift for humor, Jermaine never knew a stranger; he had an exceptional ability to make everyone feel instantly at home and fill a room with laughter.

Above all, Jermaine’s heart belonged to his family. His children were his greatest pride and joy and the center of his world. He was also the proud grandfather of three cherished grandchildren.

With whispers of love and hands held gently, the world said goodbye to Jermaine DeRamus on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the age of 54. He was supported throughout his life by his grandmother, Ruth Tate, and by his parents, Reuben and Janice Sutherline. He is survived by his children, Dominque, Jermaine Jr., and Tremell; his twin brother, Dewayen; his brothers, Orlando Lamont (Joy), Kevin L. (Timeka), and Damon; his companion, Timika Hendricks; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

While our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we take comfort in knowing that Jermaine’s strength, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family will live on in all who knew him. Though he may be gone, he will never be forgotten.

On Monday, July 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, KeOnda Lashay Washington peacefully transitioned into eternal rest in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, on her 37th birthday.
Though her earthly journey was far too short, the love she poured into others will continue to bloom for generations to come.

KeOnda Lashay Washington (Jarmon) was born on July 20, 1989, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Kendra Jarmon and Jody Whitfield. KeOnda was the eldest of eight children, a role she embraced with love, strength, and grace. She naturally became a protector, mentor, and guiding light to those who looked up to her, always leading with compassion and a heart full of encouragement.

She attended Iroquois High School in Louisville, Kentucky. A gifted athlete, KeOnda was a proud member of the 2007 Iroquois High School Lady Raiders basketball team, which advanced to the state finals. That remarkable achievement remained a source of pride throughout her life and reflected her determination, teamwork, and competitive spirit. KeOnda furthered her education at Capella University, where she was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

Passionate about helping adult children of addicts heal from childhood trauma and reconnect with their inner child, she envisioned creating a healing platform called The Victorian Experience, named in honor of her great-aunt, Vickie Smith, whose love, guidance, and unwavering support helped shape the woman she became.

Professionally, KeOnda dedicated more than a decade of service to Quest Diagnostics as a phlebotomist. She was known for her gentle spirit, professionalism, and genuine compassion toward every patient she encountered. She understood that sometimes the smallest act of kindness could make the biggest difference in someone’s day, and she carried that belief into every aspect of her life.

On June 23, 2018, KeOnda married the love of her life, Taiesha Netay Washington, in Destin, Florida. Together they built a life rooted in faith, love, friendship, and unshakable support. Their union was a beautiful example of unconditional love and partnership. Together they shared a daughter, Nia Imani Boyd, while also opening their hearts and home to KeOnda’s younger brothers, Keondre and Kureon Jarmon, whom she proudly raised under her guardianship. Family was never simply important to KeOnda—it was her ministry.

KeOnda lived intentionally. She found peace in journaling, meditating, reading, writing, taking nature walks, and spending quiet moments surrounded by sunflowers, a flower that came to symbolize her radiant spirit and hope. She believed deeply in healing from within and inspired countless others to do the same through honest conversations, encouragement, and her creative endeavors.

As the heart behind FlowerChild, KeOnda created a space where healing, faith, authenticity, and self-discovery flourished. Whether through her journaling, creative expression, or the FlowerChild Podcast, she encouraged others to embrace their stories, trust God’s purpose, and bloom despite life’s challenges. Her words carried wisdom beyond her years, and her gentle presence reminded others that healing was always possible.

To know KeOnda was to experience genuine love. She possessed a rare gift for making people feel seen, heard, valued, and accepted. Her smile was contagious, and her heart knew no strangers. She gave freely of herself without expecting anything in return, always believing that kindness costs nothing but means everything.

Above all, Jesus Christ was the foundation of KeOnda’s life. Her faith was not merely something she spoke about—it was something she lived every single day.

Ke'Jon M. Nunez was born on June 25, 1996, in Barstow, California, to Mark Nunez and Tanya Arrington.
On April 26, 2015, Ke’Jon publicly dedicated his life through baptism at the Kingdom Center in Louisville, Kentucky, surrounded by the love and support of family and friends. His faith became a meaningful part of his journey and remained a source of strength throughout his life.

Ke’Jon was truly one of a kind. His smile could brighten any room, and his presence brought joy, laughter, and comfort to everyone around him. He had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen, loved, and appreciated. Family was at the center of his world, and he treasured every opportunity to spend time with those he loved. Though his time with us was far too short, the love he shared, the laughter he inspired, and the countless lives he touched will forever remain part of his legacy.
