There may be more to recovery than changing what happens with food.
Recovery can create room to notice what matters to you, recognize what you need, and reconnect with the person you are beneath the patterns of compulsive eating.
You do not have to know exactly who you hope to become. You can begin by making room for one honest thought, one supportive connection, and one day at a time.

Is this a big problem?

Perfectionism can keep us waiting to recover instead of taking the next right action.
In “Letting Go of Perfectionism,” Amy shares how coming back to OA after relapse brought a new understanding of powerlessness, humility, and gentleness. Desperation became a gift because it made Amy willing to accept help and work the program.
Amy began using recovery actions: attending meetings, getting a sponsor, reading the Big Book and OA literature, calling members, working the Steps, and following a plan of eating to the best of Amy’s ability.
The story reminds us that recovery does not have to be perfect to be real.

Step 9 is about taking responsibility for your actions

Step 9 is about taking responsibility for your actions

What if making things right is not about changing the past—or controlling what happens next?
Step Nine states: “Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.”
This Step invites us to take responsibility for our actions and make appropriate amends without attaching an expectation to another person’s response. As we address what is ours to address, we may also begin working through guilt we have continued to carry.
Direct amends are not possible in every situation. When someone cannot be found or has passed away, members may work with a sponsor to consider an appropriate indirect way to make amends.
With love as its Spiritual Principle, Step Nine gives us an opportunity to put recovery into action through honesty, responsibility, compassion, and a willingness to move forward.

How Often are Your Food Thoughts?

How Often are Your Food Thoughts?

Sometimes the consequences become clearer when we stop looking only at our eating and begin looking at the whole day.
Was it harder to concentrate?
Were responsibilities delayed?
Did plans change?
Was sleep interrupted?
Was it difficult to be present with other people?
These experiences may show that eating is affecting more than one moment. It may be shaping health, relationships, routines, and participation in life.
Save this post for private reflection or share the resource with someone who may benefit from learning more. Take the OA quiz privately through the link in the comments and explore whether your eating may show that our relationship with food is affecting more of your life than you realized.

Imagine life without food cravings. For many of us, that felt impossible—until we found OA.
One member explained:
“I had never in my memory experienced life without cravings except when physically ill. So it was with utter amazement that I had that freedom after only two weeks of following directions and committing to program. From there on, having had such a great gift, commitment to program was easy.”
Through OA, thousands have found relief from compulsive eating and the obsession with food. The program provides more than abstinence—it offers community, spiritual growth, and practical tools that make recovery possible one day at a time.
You don’t have to face this alone. OA offers a safe space where healing begins and life becomes full again. 🌿
